Lions’ head coach resigns

The Clear Lake School Board accepted the resignation of Clear Lake varsity boys basketball Coach Kevin Kahler Monday night.

Kahler, who is in his eighth year as the Lions’ head coach, said Tuesday he had no comment about his resignation and promised to release a statement after the basketball season is over.

Kahler’s resignation was included in the School Board’s consent agenda Monday.  There was no discussion.

Roger M. Zirbel

Roger M. Zirbel, 68, of Raymond, Miss., formerly of Clear Lake, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2014 in Jackson, Miss.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014 at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake, with Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating.  Military honors will be provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W.  Visitation will be one hour before the service.  The burial will take place at a later time in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Those who desire may leave memorials to the family.

Susan M. Beenken

Susan Margaret Beenken, 67, of Mason City, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014 at her home.

Memorial services were held on Friday, Feb. 14, 2014 at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, Mason City, with Rev. Art Zewert officiating.  Family suggests memorials to Susan Margaret Beenken Memorial Fund.  

Susan was born Dec. 7, 1946 in Albia, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Marjorie (Bennett) Wilson.  She attended school in Lovilia, Iowa.

Robert E. Kennedy

Robert E. Kennedy, 81, of Clear Lake, passed away on Friday, Feb. 14, 2014 at his home.  Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014 at Grace Evangelical Free Church, Mason City, with Pastor John Tank of Harvest Bible Chapel officiating.  Interment took place in Memorial Park Cemetery.  

James G. Marshall

James G. Marshall, age 78, of Austin, Minn., died Friday, Feb. 14, 2014 at his winter home in Fulton, Texas. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, Feb. 21, 2014 at 11 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin with Fr. James Steffes officiating.  Interment will follow in the Calvary Cemetery.  Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin, and will continue on Friday morning for one hour prior to 

Sena Christensen

Sena Margereta Christensen, 97, of Boone, Iowa, formerly of Clear Lake, passed away Feb. 11, 2014, at the Westhaven Community, Boone.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014 at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with Rev. Carl Hedberg of St. John Lutheran Church, rural Garner, Iowa officiating.  Burial was in St. John Cemetery, rural Garner.

Memorials can be made to St. John Lutheran Church or to the donor’s choice.

Wyatt B. Lang

     Wyatt Bronson Lang, nine month old son of Gavin and Angela Lang, passed away on Feb. 2, 2014 at the University Hospital in Columbia, Mo.

     Funeral services were held on Sunday, Feb. 16 at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, Iowa, with Pastor Blaine Pritchett officiating.  Burial was in the Mt. Olive Cemetery near Hamburg.

Six wrestlers looking for individual titles

Clear Lake’s wrestling team appears to be peaking at the right time. 

Team starts things off in State Duals today

For the 11th time in the past 26 years, the Clear Lake wrestling team has qualified for the State Dual Meet Tournament. The Lions, the fifth seed in the Class 2A field, will take the mat today (Wednesday, Feb. 19) at 11 a.m. against the number four seed, Creston-Orient Macksburg.  The Lions have a dual meet record of 23-4, while C-OM is 16-0. 

Last second shot ends perfect season

The Clear Lake boys survived a pair of close games to end the regular conference season undefeated, but then had their perfect regular season disrupted by a last second shot.
