Cardinals move NIC record to 6-6

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys basketball team split a pair of games last week, moving their North Iowa Conference record to 6-6 and the overall record to 9-9.

McChesney named interim police chief

Clear Lake Mayor Nelson Crabb announced Monday night he is appointing Police Lieutenant Rex McChesney as interim police chief.  He will lead the department after Chief Greg Peterson retires April 30.

Extreme cold, deep frost causing pipe problems

It was 75 years ago this month that Billy’s Casino, one of Clear Lake’s night clubs on the south shore, burned to the ground.  The fire started in the rest room, where the owner was using a blow torch to thaw out the water pipes which had frozen with sub-zero temperatures.

At least three Clear Lake homeowners, and dozens more throughout North Iowa are facing the same frozen pipe dilemma this year.

City will hold the line on tax rate

The tax rate for the City of Clear Lake is proposed to remain the same for the fourth consecutive year.  The City Council reviewed the proposed fiscal year 2015 municipal budget at a special Council meeting held Monday night.  

The proposed tax rate is $10.54 per $1,000 of taxable valuation for the 2015 fiscal year, which begins July 1, 2014, and ends June 30, 2015.

Sanitary District Board seeks trustee

The Clear Lake Sanitary District Board of Trustees is expected to appoint a temporary trustee at its meeting Feb. 18 to replace Kelly McLaughlin.

According to Superintendent Kevin Moler, McLaughlin has accepted the position of Maintenance Supervisor at the Sanitary District plant, making it necessary for him to resign his position as a trustee. 

McLaughlin, who served as facilities and transportation director for the Clear Lake School District for 12 years, was chosen from four applicants interviewing for the post.  

Lions in driver’s seat to capture NCC crown

The top ranked Clear Lake boys continued to roll along with two more North Central Conference wins last week. The Lions won at home against Clarion-Goldfield, then traveled to St.

Clear Lake wrestlers win NCC dual title

The Clear Lake wrestling team picked up two wins Friday night, and in doing so claimed a share of the North Central Conference dual meet title.  The Lions finished in a three-way tie with Webster City and Humboldt.  All three teams ended up 7-1 and will receive a trophy. 

St. Ed’s gets revenge

St. Ed’s got revenge for their only loss of the season, beating the Clear Lake girls (14-2, 13-1) Friday night in Fort Dodge.  The win puts the two teams on even standing atop the North Central Conference with four NCC games left to play.
