Meints and Toppin earn NIC recognition

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys basketball team had two members named to All North Iowa Conference Teams for the 2013-14 season.  Braden Meints was named to the First Team and Joel Toppin earned Second Team honors.

Meints, a senior, was the leading scorer for the Cardinals.  Meints averaged 15.6 points per game and recorded 358 points for the season, including 46 three-point shots. Meints also led the team under the boards with 172 total rebounds.  He averaged 7.5 rebounds a game.  Meints also led the team in blocks with 10 and in steals with 42.

Brinkman to lead CL girls golf team

Adam Brinkman, a Clear Lake golf standout during his high school years, will now lead the Lions girls team as its new head coach.  Brinkman replaces Fred Wieck, who submitted his resignation to the School Board earlier this year.  Wieck is stepping down after coaching 24 years in the program.

Colon earns top seed at NCAA tournament

UNI’s Joe Colon earned a top seed at the NCAA wrestling tournament, while four other Panthers were seeded in the top 15.

The NCAA announced the 330 student-athletes, including 45 at-large selections, for the 2014 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, to be held March 20-22, in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Michael S. Wyborny

Michael “Mick” Shane Wyborny, 65, of Mason City, died Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at his home.

Per Mick’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded and a Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 24, 2014 at the Rolling Acres Christian Reformed Church, 340 20th St. S.W., Mason City, with Pastor Nate DeVries officiating.  The family requests casual attire be worn for the service.  The family will greet friends one hour prior to the memorial service at the church on Monday.

The Clear Lake City Council gave its unanimous approval Monday night to a resolution providing for the issuance of $1.62 million to fund a forgivable loan for a business planning to build a warehouse and distribution center in the Larry Luker Memorial Industrial Park.

The city has reached a development agreement with Windmill Realty LLC, which now has the legal obligation to create the tax base, capital investment, and jobs 

CL teacher, coach hospitalized after spring break accident

A Clear Lake High School teacher and coach is continuing to make progress after being rushed to a hospital with head injuries suffered in a spring break vacation mishap.

RABGRAI meeting scheduled March 29

On Saturday, March 29, RAGBRAI is hosting a Pass Through Town meeting for the towns on the Forest City to Mason City route in July 2014.    At this meeting Clear Lake and Ventura will find out guidelines for their role as a pass through town on July 23.  

According to Dianne Thompson, chairperson for Clear Lake’s RAGBRAI activities, one obvious expectation for Clear Lake will be hundreds of volunteers to be a part of RAGBRAI XVII.    Volunteers will be asked to get involved with various tasks both prior to and on July 23, she said.

GHV girls open track season at Wartburg Indoor Meet

Hard to believe that track season is here, but the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls track team has already competed in their first meet.  The team competed at the Wartburg Indoor Meet on Tuesday, March 11.

“Getting on a track was exciting and so beneficial to our team,” said Coach Dyan Childress.  “It gives us a chance to see where we’re at so we know what work needs to be done.”
