Girls tennis team tops St. Ed’s in season opener

The Clear Lake girls tennis team opened the season with an 8-1 victory over St. Ed’s on April 2.

With the exception of a very close number one singles match, in which Lindsey 

Loudenburg was defeated, 11-10, by 2014 state qualifier Lily Peterson, the Lions dominated.

Doebel continues winning ways

Brennen Doebel, a senior wrestler on the Clear Lake High School team, was invited to participate in the Annual North/South All Star Meet, held on March 28, in Charles City, Iowa.  The top seniors wrestlers in the state are invited to the meet.

Doebel faced State Champion Tristan Birt, of Dubuque Wahlert, and defeated him, 4-0.

CL boys soccer team is ranked third in IHSSCA Class 1A

The Clear Lake boys soccer team, which made it all the way to the State semi-finals last season, is ranked third in the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association’s pre-season rankings for Class 1A.  

Cardinals top CAL in boys soccer showdown

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys soccer team kicked the season off on a winning note, capturing a 4-1 victory over CAL Community Monday night, April 6.

“I was really impressed with the boys, as they played very physical and aggressive,” said Coach Eric Williams.  “It’s also great to see the young guys step up and play hard and also to see the senior leadership we have by setting the younger players up to succeed.”

The Cardinals are starting three freshman and three more are playing key roles off the bench.

GHV girls golf team tops C-G

Frayne earns medalist honors

The first meet of the season for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls golf team was a success, despite the cold weather.  The Cardinals picked up a 190-199 win over Clarion-Goldfield and freshman Bailee Frayne claimed medalist honors.

Jack B. Easton, 90 years and nine days, of Clear Lake, died Saturday morning, March 28, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, Mason City.

Phomma Lo

Phomma Lo, 61, died Friday, March 27, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 1, 2015, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the

 Rev. Dr. Pat Hall officiating of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.  Visitation will be one hour before the service.  Following the service he will be cremated and inurnment will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Catherine Alcorn

Catherine S. Alcorn, 64, of Mason City, passed away peacefully with her loving family at her side on Sunday, March 22, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa. According to her wishes she requested to be cremated. 

A funeral Mass was held at on Thursday, March 26, at Epiphany Parish St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Rodney Allers and Father Tim Lannon officiating.

Memorials will go towards the Delphine Suter Memorial Nursing Scholarship and the Hospice of North Iowa.

Henrietta Muth

Henrietta Fern Muth, 82, of Rockwell, Iowa, formerly of Clear Lake, died Friday, March 27, 2015, at the Rockwell Nursing Home.   Funeral services were held on Monday, March 30, 2015, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, Mason City, with pastor Sid Bohls, of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Mason City, officiating. A private interment will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, at a later date. 

Beverly Trumbull

Beverly Trumbull, 78, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Friday, March 27, 2015, at Unity Point Hospice Unit, Cedar Rapids, after a brief illness. A service was held on March 30, 2015 at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.  Burial was in the Coggon Cemetery, Coggon, Iowa.
