The Clear Lake community celebrates Earth Day this week.  Locally, Jan Lovell heads up the Earth Day effort, which has grown to more than a week of activities sharing a common goal of  caring for and celebrating our home and our world.   She rightly points out the lake’s restoration was an impetus for starting the first Clear Lake Earth Day. 

Veteran’s Memorial named Iowa 9-Hole Course of the Year

Representatives of Veterans Memorial Golf Club attended the Iowa Golf Association’s Annual Awards Banquet on Friday, April 3,  where VMGC was named the nine-hole course of the year. 

At the ceremony, the representatives were presented with a plaque memorializing the honor by Iowa Golf Association President, Tom Christensen.

School Board makes $640,000 in budget cuts

Motion to phase out French is turned down by Board on 3-2 vote

The Clear Lake School Board took action Thursday on $640,048 in proposed budget cuts for the next school year.  After hearing comments from students and parents, the Board ultimately decided to keep positions intact in the foreign language and vocal music programs. 

Kwik Star eyeing $10M store, truck center here

Kwik Star/Kwik Trip is preparing to break ground on a $10 million project on Highway 122, just east of Interstate 35.

Clear Lake City Administrator Scott Flory confirmed Tuesday he has given Kwik Star/Trip officials a draft of a development agreement 

Jule C. McCullough

Jule Claire McCullough, age 70, of Pine Island, Minn., passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Tuesday, April 7, 2015, at Saint Mary’s Hospital, in Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 13, 2015, at Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Pine Island, with Pastor Kip Groettum and Pastor Audrey Lukasak officiating.  Burial was in the Pine Island Cemetery.

Wilbur D. Peck

Wilbur Duane Peck, 80, Ventura, Iowa, died Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 11, 2015, at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with Rev. Bernie Colorado officiating.  Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.  

Family suggests memorials to Wilbur Duane Peck Memorial Fund.  The family would like to thank Hospice of North Iowa for the special care that was given to Duane. 

Dale A. Barkema

Dale A. Barkema, 85, of Clear Lake, died Sunday, April 5, 2015, at the VA Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.  Visitation was held on Saturday, April 11, 2015, at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, 4108 Kildeer Avenue, Kensett, Iowa, followed by graveside services at the Elk Creek Cemetery in Kensett, with Pastor Tom Martin officiating.  Military honors were conducted by the Mason City Veterans 

Association.  

Mary L. O’Banion

Mary Lavonne O’Banion, 87, of Mason City, Iowa died Monday at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Friday April 10, 2015, at the Epiphany Parish, St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City.  Burial was in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Mary was born Feb. 27, 1928, in Clear Lake, the daughter of Ray and Rena (Murphy) Rice.  She attended school in Clear Lake and was a member of the class of 1947.

Albert R. Swale, Jr.

Albert Roy Swale, Jr., 89, of Clear Lake, died April 3, 2015, at Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake. 

Per Al’s wishes, his body has been cremated.  Graveside inurnment will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 8, 2015, in West Union Cemetery, West Union, Iowa.

Al was born Jan. 18, 1926, in West Union, the son of Albert and Ethel (Matzenger) Swale. He graduated from West Union High School, class of 1943.

Lions dominate in opening soccer games

The Clear Lake boys soccer team kicked off the season last week with a pair of dominating wins.  The Lions, ranked number three in the pre-season poll, scored 10 goals in wins over Garner-Hayfield/Ventura and Humboldt.
