Cardinals top CAL in boys soccer showdown
The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys soccer team kicked the season off on a winning note, capturing a 4-1 victory over CAL Community Monday night, April 6.
“I was really impressed with the boys, as they played very physical and aggressive,” said Coach Eric Williams. “It’s also great to see the young guys step up and play hard and also to see the senior leadership we have by setting the younger players up to succeed.”
The Cardinals are starting three freshman and three more are playing key roles off the bench.
Scoring one goal apiece for GHV was Ryan Meyers, Jack Bertilson, Connor Burke and Turner Albertson.
Dalton Basinger played a very unselfish match, with three assists and helping those around him to score.
Goalie Jeremiah Loschen had four saves and one goal scored against him.
The Cardinals had nine shots on goal, with Patrick Terhark taking three shots, Meyers and Burke had two shots on goal and Albertson and Bertilson each took one shot.
Coach Williams praised the defensive efforts of Logan Johnson, Logan Ryerson, Colton Raw and Nick Joynt.
“This truly was a team effort and they all played great,” said Williams.
The team is home on Monday, April 13, when they face Iowa Falls-Alden at 5:30 p.m.
