Cardinals fall to Humboldt

It was a tough night for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls soccer team, with a few key players competing in the State Track Meet.  The Cardinals fell to Humboldt, 4-1, on Thursday, May 22.

“It will be really nice when we get our full team back.  The girls have stepped up with key girls being gone,” said Coach Josh 

Banse.

Coach Banse is excited to get the full time back together, just in time for Regional play that begins Tuesday, June 3, at Clear Lake.

Season ends for GHV girls

The season came to a close for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls golf team when they competed in Regionals on Monday, May 19.

The Cardinals finished fourth with 418.  Clarion-Goldfield won the meet carding a 393, followed by Okoboji, 397, and Algona, 403.

“As a team we were simply outclassed today,” said Coach Todd Greiman.  “Our score was a little higher than usual, but every girl 

would have needed to play flawlessly through 18 holes for us to move on. “

GHV boys soccer team records a 7-0 shutout

   For the first time in school history, the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys soccer team recorded a shut-out. They stopped CAL, 7-0, on Monday, May 19.
 Senior Teddy Zrostlik also made school history by being the first player to score three goals in one game.

Walleyes plentiful at 25th Classic

The team of Nate Guerdet and Terry Mitchell put together two solid days of fishing and finished as winners of the 25th Clear Lake Walleye Classic on Clear Lake over the weekend.  The anglers weighed in 15.89 pounds of walleye on Saturday, including the big fish of the day at 6.26 pounds.  They followed that up with 12.44 pounds on Sunday for a total of 28.33

Jones earns a trip to State Tennis Meet

Sophomore Sam Jones will return to the State Tennis Meet May 30-31.  Jones finished as the District Champion after going undefeated at Fort Dodge Thursday.  The Lions were second as a team with 19 points.  Fort Dodge St. Edmond won the District with 27 points.

Jones received a first round bye, but then went on to defeat Ben Albright, of St. Ed’s, 6-2, 6-1.  He was a 6-2, 6-0 winner in the semi-finals over a Denison player, then dominated in the finals, topping Caleb Perkins, from Iowa Falls-Alden, 6-1, 6-0.

Talk about peaking at the right time!

The Clear Lake boys golf team captured the North Central Conference Tournament title Wednesday and advanced to Districts with a runner-up finish at Friday’s Sectional Meet.  They advance to play in the 3A District at Waverly Municipal Golf Course Friday, May 23.  The top two teams in the District will advance to State.

“Its all about making putts and smart decision making at this point of the season and we are doing a good job of that,” said Coach Bart Smith.

Two more shut-outs for CL boys soccer team

More games, more shut outs for the Clear Lake boys soccer team.  The Lions blanked Humboldt and Webster City during the past week, stretching their defensive perfection to 10 games this season.

The Lions made the most of Senior and Parents Night Thursday, topping Humboldt 3-0.

Boys tennis team advances to Sub-State

The Lions began post-season play Saturday, hosting Denison-Schleswig at the Clear Lake High School tennis courts.  The Lions won, 5-3, to advance to Sub-State against LeMars this Saturday at Fort Dodge St. Edmond.  The winner of the Clear Lake vs. LeMars match will take on the winner of the St. Ed’s vs. Spencer match, with the winning team advancing to the State Team 

Tennis Tournament.

CL girls golf team dominates at Class 3A Regional Gold Meet

The Clear Lake girls golf team dominated play at the Class 3A Regional Gold meet played Monday, May 19, at the Cresco Country Club.  The Lions returned to the clubhouse with a 375, easily outdistancing runner-up Independence with 399.  Both teams will advance to play Tuesday, May 27, at Independence for the chance to go to State.

The Lions were led by freshman Emily Snelling, who finished just one stroke back from medalist Savannah Lentz, of Crestwood.  Clear Lake’s Paige Backhaus had the third best score of the day at 88.

GHV boys track team wins North Iowa Conference title

Winning the North Iowa Conference was a goal for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys track team at the beginning of the season and Tuesday night, the team realized that dream.  The Cards won the title by a large margin with 154.50.  Forest City was second with 95 points and Belmond-Klemme and North Iowa tied for third with 70 points.
