 Roger Merle Miller, 86, of Independence, Iowa, died peacefully on July 17, 2014 at the Buchanan County Long Term Care Center in Independence.
 Funeral services were held on Monday, July 21, 2014, at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence, with Rev. Don Plamondon officiating.  Interment with Military Honors were held in St. John’s Cemetery.

Clear Lake welcomes thousands of bicyclists participating in the Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa today!  The first bicyclists will arrive about 6 a.m., with the majority probably getting to Clear Lake between 8 a.m. and noon.  

Betz will resign School Board seat this month

 Clear Lake School Board member Deb Betz has announced she will resign her position effective July 29.

 Betz and her family are moving to Venice, Fla., where her husband, David, has accepted a new job. The Monday, July 28, regular Board meeting will be her final meeting.

Parks Board votes against veteran’s memorial at Sea Wall

 The Clear Lake Park Board has voted 5-1 to recommend to the City Council that a proposed veterans memorial not be placed in front of the Sea Wall.
About 60 persons filled the Lakeview Community Room Wednesday night to offer their opinions to the Board and await their recommendation to the City Council, 

Council will address veteran’s memorial at Aug. 4 meeting

The Clear Lake City Council is expected to take action Aug. 4 on a recommendation from the Parks Board to not allow a veterans memorial at the Sea Wall.

Parks and Recreation Department Director Randy Miller reported to the Council Monday that after tabling a decision in June, the Parks Board voted July 16 to recommend that a proposed veterans memorial not be placed in front of the Sea Wall.  The vote was 5-1.  (See related story on this page).

School District involved in $50K bullying settlement

The Clear Lake School District has paid a $50,000 settlement to the parent of a Clear Lake High School graduate based upon claims filed with the Iowa Civil Rights Commission alleging discrimination.
 School Board minutes and General Fund bills published in the July 9th Clear Lake Mirror-Reporter listed a $50,000 payment made to Tim Davidson on behalf of his son, Spencer, a 2014 CLHS graduate.  

Charles H. Norris

 Charles H. (Chuck) Norris, 88, of rural Mason City, passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa West Campus, Mason City.
 A Celebration of his life was on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, 508 2nd Ave. N., Clear Lake, with Rev. Bernie Colorado officiating. Military honors were provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W. Memorials may be given to the Charles H. Norris Memorial Fund.

Maxine G. Kostopulos

Maxine G. Kostopulos, 95, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and formerly of Clear Lake, died Thursday, July 10, 2014, at the Bethany Lutheran Home in Council Bluffs.
 A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 16, 2014, in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Rudy E. Wieck

Rudy Edward Wieck, 84, of Traer, Iowa, passed away on Monday, July 14, 2014, at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo, Iowa.
 A time of celebration and life gathering will be held at Traer Golf and Country Club on Thursday, July 17, 2014, from 6-8 p.m. and another gathering will be held at the Clear Lake Yacht Club on Friday, July 18, 2014, from 6-8 p.m.
