Richard “Jeff” Van Slyke, 64, of Forest City, Iowa died Aug. 4, 2014, at his home due to natural causes. A gathering of family and friends was held Friday, Aug. 8, 2014, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Chapel, 505 North Clark St., Forest City, with a time for sharing memories. Cremation has taken place and Inurnment will be at a later date.

Daniel Kimball Ott, 50, of Batavia, Ill., formerly of Excelsior, Minn., passed away suddenly on July 23, 2014. A celebration of Dan’s life will be held on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at Bayview Event Center, 687 Excelsior Blvd., Excelsior. Burial will be in Clear Lake at a date yet to be determined.

IGNITE Clear Lake campaign receives matching grant

 The IGNITE Clear Lake Fireworks Endowment Campaign has received a $75,000 matching grant from John and Janis Ruan, of the Ruan Foundation. This will help the campaign close out its $150,000 remaining amount of funds needed to successfully end the campaign.

School Board sticks with KESS despite number changes

 The Clear Lake School Board clarified Monday it spent more than $20,000 with Kelly Educational Staffing Services (KESS), not $12,000 as previously reported, but stuck with its earlier vote to pay KESS to handle substitute teaching assignments this school year.
 “I’m disappointed we didn’t have the numbers-- and we probably should have delayed our vote until we had rock solid numbers. But at this point we are stuck,” said Board member Mark Tesar.

 Rose Marie Peckham, 77, Clear Lake, died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014, at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City.
 A funeral service for Rose will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014, at the First Congregational Church, 205 West 10th Ave. N., Clear Lake, with Pastor Bernie Colorado officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time on Wednesday at the church.

Thomas J. Kirshbaum

Thomas J. Kirshbaum, 64, 625 14th Ave. N., Apt 211, Clear Lake, died Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at his home.

 A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 8, 2014, at the Fertile Community Center, Fertile, Iowa.
