Rudy Edward Wieck, 84, of Traer, Iowa, passed away on Monday, July 14, 2014, at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo, Iowa.
 A time of celebration and life gathering will be held at Traer Golf and Country Club on Thursday, July 17, 2014, from 6-8 p.m. and another gathering will be held at the Clear Lake Yacht Club on Friday, July 18, 2014, from 6-8 p.m.

Shirley Mae (Mentele) Chenchar, 82, from Des Moines, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2014. Memorial services will be at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, in Clear Lake, at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 22 and St. Augustin’s Church, in Des Moines, at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 23.

GHV tops Clear Lake in Class 3A Regional Tournament

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura softball team started post-season play on an upswing when they faced Clear Lake (4-23) on Tuesday, July 15, to open the Class 3A Regional Tournament.

String of losses drop Lions to number three

The Clear Lake baseball team (28-5) dropped from number one to number three in Class 3A in the final weekly rankings of the 2014 season. Three losses during the week, two of them to Algona and the other to Webster City, contributed to the fall and made the Lions runner-up in the North Central Conference with a 15-3 record.

Cards fall in opening round of Districts

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura baseball team went 1-3 for the week, moving their record to 8-19 as they headed into District play.

 GHV hosted a doubleheader on Monday, July 7, with visiting teams Forest City and Osage. Forest City topped the Cardinals, 7-2, but GHV picked up a 2-1 win over Osage.

GOPs announce Rand Paul is coming to area

 Cerro Gordo GOP Chairman Gabriel Haugland has announced that U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-Kent.) will headline a breakfast fundraiser for the Cerro Gordo County GOP on Tuesday, Aug. 5, from 8-9 a.m. at the Mason City Airport Restaurant, located at the Municipal Airport.
 Sen. Paul will appear alongside other local and statewide elected Republican officials at the breakfast.
