Mary Anne Lydon

Mary Anne Lydon, 88, Des Moines, Iowa, went to be with God after a 10 year battle with Alzheimer’s on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2015, at Bishop Drumm Care Center, in Johnston, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Jan. 12, at Our Lady of Peace Chapel, Bishop Drumm Care Center, 5837 Winwood Drive, Johnston, with burial at Glendale Cemetery.

  Mary Anne was born Sept. 17, 1926, in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Raleigh and Nellie (Winberg) Franklin. 

Mary Stattelman

Mary Katherine Stattelman, 81, 4 South 18th St., Clear Lake, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015, from the result of a car accident.      

A Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, Jan. 10, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 1001 9th Ave. S., Clear Lake, with the Rev. John Gossman officiating.   Inurnment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery at a later date.   Memorials may be directed to Newman Catholic Schools, Saint Patrick’s Parish and Posada (www.posadapueblo.org), Pueblo, Colo.    

Wayne Muhlenbruch

Wayne O. Muhlenbruch, 80, of Clear Lake, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2015, at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

A celebration of Wayne’s life was held on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake.  The family suggests memorials to Wayne O. Muhlenbruch memorial fund.

Wayne was born on March 15, 1934, in rural Rockwell, Iowa, the son of John and Laura (Stadtlander) Muhlenbruch.  He graduated from Swaledale High School in 1951.

Winds whipped up a blizzard Thursday afternoon throughout North Iowa, stranding motorists and creating dangerous situations throughout the region.

Clear Lake woman killed in two-vehicle accident

A Clear Lake woman was killed in a two vehicle crash on the outskirts of Mason City Tuesday, Jan. 6.

Mary Stattelman, 81, of Clear Lake, was driving a Toyota Camry on 19th Street Southwest when her vehicle collided with a Ford pickup driven by 58-year-old Bradley Schermer, of Latimer, Iowa.

The accident, which occurred about one-half mile east of Eisenhower Avenue, was reported at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Stattelman was pronounced dead at the scene.

North Iowa leaders celebrated the selection of Air Choice One as the carrier for the Mason City Municipal Airport Monday with a ribbon cutting.

Lions move to top of NCC

The Clear Lake boys improved to 6-2 with a two-point win over North Central Conference rival Humboldt Tuesday, Jan. 9.  The Lions moved to the top of the NCC standings with a 78-76 victory.  They are now 5-0 in the NCC.  Humboldt and Algona are next at 4-1.

Four players finished in double figures for the Lions.

GHV boys on a roll

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys rolled through last week, picking up three more wins and moving their record to 8-2 in the North Iowa Conference and 9-2 overall.

Clear Lake girls lack rhythm; fall to Humboldt, 61-55

Clear Lake had a hard time finding their rhythm in their first game back from the holiday break Jan. 9.  Humboldt took advantage of Lion mistakes and came away with a 61-55 North Central Conference win.  The loss dropped the Lions to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the NCC.

“We weren’t able to match their energy in this game,” said Clear Lake Coach Bart Smith.
