State releases school enrollment numbers

Statewide numbers climb; Local numbers drop

For the fourth year in a row, the overall number of students enrolled in Iowa’s public schools for the 2014-15 school year increased from the year before, according to the official certified enrollment report released Jan. 30 by the Iowa Department of Education.

  This pattern follows 17 years of declining enrollment. However, the rate of growth is slowing and is expected to plateau in the years to come.

Postmaster pleads guilty to stealing mail, contents of packages

        A former postal services employee who stole mail pled guilty Friday, Jan. 23,  in federal court in Sioux City.

  Danny D. Miller, 55, from Ventura, was convicted of theft of mail by a postal services employee.

Ventura Mayor Art Tesar will step down Jan. 31

Ventura Mayor Art Tesar submitted his resignation to the City Council Monday night.  Tesar, who was elected in November 2013, is moving out of the Ventura city limits and into Clear Lake.  The resignation is effective Saturday, Jan. 31.

 

More sites eyed for vets memorial mock-up

The Veteran’s Memorial Task Force of Clear Lake recently met and decided on three potential locations to place mock-ups for a proposed Veteran’s Memorial. As reported last week, a mock-up of the memorial has already been placed at the Seawall in downtown Clear Lake for public 

viewing. The scaled display will remain at that location until mid-February.

Ventura restaurant re-opens

Kotz opens door to The Colony Inn today

Lois Kotz says her hometown of Ventura has been very good to her.  Now, she’s hoping she can be good to Ventura.

Kotz will open The Colony Inn for business today (Wednesday, Jan. 28).

June Turek

June Elizabeth Turek, 90, of Clear Lake, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015 at Hospice of North Iowa surrounded by her loving family.  

A memorial service was held Tuesday, Jan. 27, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating.  Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.  The family requests that donations in June’s memory be made to Hospice of North Iowa

Edith Alsbury

Edith Lew (Enabnit) Alsbury, 92, a resident of Mechanicsville Nursing and Rehab Center, formerly of Mason City, passed away on Friday, Jan. 23, 2015.  A celebration of Edith’s life 

will be held this summer, with burial in Mt. Vernon Township Cemetery, Clear Lake, Iowa.  Per her wishes, her body was cremated.

Sharon Carmody

Sharon Kay Carmody, 72, of Clear Lake, Iowa died Friday Jan. 23, 2015 at the Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa.

A Celebration of Sharon’s Life was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday Jan. 27, 2015 at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake, with Rev. Travis Stevick of Swaledale United 

Methodist Church officiating.  Burial was in Clear Lake Cemetery.

The family suggests memorials to Sharon Kay Carmody memorial fund.

Mary Lou Sheldon

Mary Lou Sheldon, 76, passed away on Jan. 22, 2015 surrounded by loving family. 

A memorial service will held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015 at Crosspoint Church, 9801 

France Ave S., Bloomington, Minn., with visitation one hour prior. Interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to Minot State University Research and Development or donor’s choice.
