Ronald Dean “Ron” “Skinny” Coffman, 64, of Ventura, passed away Friday, Jan. 30, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, Mason City. Ron gave in death as he gave in life, through tissue donation to the Iowa Donor Network.

A celebration of his life will be held Wednesday, Feb. 4, starting at 4 p.m. with a time of sharing at 7 p.m. at the Surf Ballroom, Clear 

Ballard tops Clear Lake grapplers, 42-27

The Clear Lake wrestling team made a long road trip to Perry Thursday night. The Lions wrestled Ballard and lost, 42-27. 

“We only had 14 meets and are allowed 15, so we were shopping around to try and get some good competition,” explained Coach Gary Weber.  “Ballard is the only team that responded, so that is how we ended up on the long road trip.”

Three more wins under Clear Lake’s belt

The Clear Lake boys notched three solid victories in the past week, improving to 11-5 overall and 9-1 in the North Central Conference.  CL 76, IF-A 28

Clear Lake manhandled NCC cellar-dweller Iowa Falls-Alden (1-15, 0-11) Tuesday, Jan. 27.  The Lions rolled, 76-28.

Shaw claims NIC Championship; team places third

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura wrestling team took a huge step in the right direction at the North Iowa Conference Meet held in Garner on Saturday, Jan. 31.  The Cardinals, who placed a solid third at the meet, crowned their first champion in almost a decade with Connor Shaw at 160-pounds.

“We had five wrestlers in the finals, which was big for us,” said Coach Steve Smith.  “It is what we needed heading into the Sectional Tournament.”

Winning streak continues for GHV

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys kept their winning streak alive and picked up two more North Iowa Conference wins last week to move their record to 13-4 in the league and 14-4 overall.

GHV 70, North Union 54

Despite a slow start, the GHV boys found their stride and defeated North Union (5-9, 6-9), 70-54, on Tuesday, Jan. 27.

CL girls win two; drop one in OT

The Clear Lake girls sandwiched an overtime loss to sixth rated Crestwood (3A) between two wins last week, sending their record to 10-6 overall.  This week the Lions travel to Charles City for a non-conference game on Thursday, then return home to play Humboldt (9-7, 7-4) on Friday.  Tuesday, Feb. 10, they will be at Webster City (4-11, 4-5).

 

GHV girls pull off close contests

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls pulled off two very close North Iowa Conference victories to end the week with a 13-5 conference mark and a 14-5 overall record.

GHV 48, North Union 45

The gym was rocking Tuesday night, Jan. 27, when the Cardinals traveled to North Union (10-5, 10-6) for a showdown that came down to the final seconds of the game.

The Warriors came out ready to play and took an early 16-9 lead.  The Cardinals battled back and got to within three at the end of the first quarter, 13-16.

Rock Around the Clock

Rock and roll fans from all over the world spent a fun-filled week rocking around the clock at the Surf Ballroom and Museum’s annual Winter Dance Party. 

Couple celebrates love at the Surf

Alicia and Justin Larson turned the Surf Ballroom’s annual celebration into a celebration of their love last week, as they exchanged vows on the dance floor during the Winter Dance Party.  

City tax rate will hold steady

For the fifth straight year, the tax rate for the City of Clear Lake will likely remain at $10.54 per $1,000 of assessed property valuation in the 2016 fiscal year.

City Administrator Scott Flory presented the City Council with a preliminary budget at its regular Monday night meeting.  The proposed budget shows total fiscal year expenditures of $12,141,766.
