    Genevieve “Gen” Mae Anderson, age 85, formerly  of Hampton, Iowa, most recently a resident of the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake, died, Friday, Dec. 9, 2011, surrounded by the love and prayers of her family.  Funeral services will be Wednesday, Dec. 14, 11 a.m., at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 1st Street Southeast, Belmond, Iowa.  The Rev. Rita Squires

    Rita Romaine Squires, 65, 1620 Highland Dr., Clear Lake, died Dec. 3, 2011 at her residence.  According to her wishes, her body has been cremated.  A remembrance gathering will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, Dec. 16, at the Lakeview Room in the Clear Lake Park Bandshell, with Pastor Jason Boyd leading the sharing.  Memorials may be given to the Rita Squires Memorial Fund. 
    Rita was born July 19, 1946 in Charles City, Iowa the daughter of Wilfred Carl and Lyla (Smith) Truex. 

LeRoy Ziesmer

    LeRoy A. Ziesmer, 82, 2602 North Shore Dr., Clear Lake, died Friday, Dec. 2, 2011, at Apache Junction, Az.  A funeral  Mass was held Saturday, Dec. 10, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Clear Lake with Rev. John R. Tilp officiating. Interment was at Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 122 W., Mason City, Iowa.  Memorials may be given to the Leroy A. Ziesmer Memorial Fund.

Clear Lake girls finding their game

After an 0-2 start on the season, the Clear Lake girls basketball team has found its game.  The Lions picked up a pair of North Central Conference wins last week to improve to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in the NCC.   They topped Iowa Falls-Alden, 60-58, then pummeled Humboldt, 64-27.

Lions pick up valuable learning experiences

There was good news and bad news in a pair of Clear Lake outings against some of the conference’s best teams last week.  The Lions (1-2)dropped their matches with Iowa Falls-Alden and Humboldt, but Coach Kevin Kahler said both games were valuable learning experiences which will set the Lions up for success the next time they play.

Vikings drop two games

It was a tough week for the Ventura boys basketball team, as they dropped a conference matchup and a non-conference tilt.

    A sluggish first quarter doomed the Vikings on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at North Sentral Kossuth/Armstrong-Ringsted in a conference showdown.
    Cold shooting by Ventura in the first quarter led to a 17-5 first quarter lead for the Eagles.

Tough competition downs the Lady Vikes

The Lady Vikes faced some stiff competition in recent basketball action, falling to two very good teams.

    It wasn’t the usual Ventura girls team that took the floor Tuesday night, Dec. 6, against NSK/A-R.

Clear Lake wrestlers record two big NCC wins

The Clear Lake wrestling team traveled to Eagle Grove and came away with two big North Central Conference wins.  The Lions beat Eagle Grove, 66-15, and Hampton, 51-15.
    “We wrestled very well Thursday night. Once again our kids won the third period on conditioning.  Coach Lester does an awesome job getting our kids into shape and it is showing up in the win column,” stated head Coach Gary Weber.

Ice boater unharmed after fall into open water

    Just days after Clear Lake had been declared “iced-in” and the usual safety reminders about the lake’s aeration system has been issued, a man aboard an ice boat fell into open water.
