Three Lady Vikes named to Cornbelt Conferene teams

  Three Ventura volleyball players were named to Cornbelt Conference teams for the 2011 season.  Emily Mathews, a sophomore, was named to the First Team, while fellow classmates Shelby Rayhons and Courtney Younge earned Second Team Recognition.
    “All three girls had a great passion for the game, they played their hearts out and have phenomenal attitudes and great work ethics,” said Coach Abby Roenfanz.  “They are all very competitive and strive to do their best.”

    Mathews was the team leader in several categories.  For the season she recorded 170 kills on 440 attack attempts.  She was 192/230 at the service line with 40 ace serves.  She also led the team in solo blocks with 43 and in assisted blocks with 28.  She also led the team in digs with 148.
    “Emily understands the game almost effortlessly.  She is a very talented all around player,” said Roenfanz.  “She has been a great vocal leader this year.”
    Rayhons recorded 83 kills out of 269 attempts.  At the service line, she was 171/200 with 36 ace serves.  She also recorded 140 digs.
    “Shelby has the insane ability to read the court, both offensively and defensively.  She knows whether to hit the ball hard or do an off speed shot and where to place it based on how the defense is set up.  She can also spot serve where ever I tell her to put.  She plays with great intensity and always wants to do better,” said Roenfanz.
    Younge was the team’s setter and recorded 298 assists.  She was also a strong server, connecting on 177 of 201 serves.  She recorded 26 ace serves.  Other stats included 107 digs and 18 total blocks.
