G-H/V volleyball team claims own tournament championship

 

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura volleyball team opened the 2012 season with a 5-0 record and a tournament title, winning their own tournament on Saturday, Aug. 25.

“We are pleased with our start, but we also found things we can work on,” said Coach Tracy Schmidt.  “It was great to see the fan support in the stands for our first outing as G-H/V.  The two programs have a lot of pride in their 

sports and now as one program we came together for a great day of volleyball.”

Lions finish as runner-up in Clarion Volleyball Tournament

 

The Clear Lake volleyball season got off to a strong start Saturday.  The Lions, who won just three matches last season, finished as runner-up this year at the Clarion Tournament with a 5-1 match record.  The Lions were 11-2 in sets.

Gerald Toppin

 

Gerald D. Toppin of Lorimor, Iowa, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2012 at Southern Hills Specialty Care of Osceola, Iowa. He was 71 years old. 

A memorial gathering was held at the Lorimor Community Building on Saturday, Aug. 25.  Burial will be in the Barney Cemetery at a later date. Stanley Harrison

 

Stanley E. Harrison, 78, 304 S. Shore Dr., Clear Lake, Iowa, died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012 at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa, surrounded by his family after a courageous eight year battle with cancer.

  A funeral service was held Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012 at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dr. Rhoda Preston and Pastor Linda Johnson Prestholt officiating.  Interment was at the Clear Lake 

Cemetery.

Doris Gansen

 

Doris Ione Gansen, 82, of 704 South 12th Street, Clear Lake, Iowa  passed away Sunday, Aug. 26, 2012 at the I.O.O.F. Home, Mason City, Iowa.

A  Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 31, 2012, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 1001 9th Ave. S, Clear Lake.   Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.  Visitation will be held at the Ward-Van

 Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th Street, Thursday from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. with a Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m.

Firemen set date for dedication of 9/11 steel monument

 

The Clear Lake Fire Department plans to unveil and dedicate a memorial featuring a steel beam pulled from 9/11 wreckage in New York in a special ceremony set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11.

 

Anonymous tip leads to arrest of three with stolen truck

 

An anonymous tip helped Clear Lake police arrest three persons  Aug. 22 on charges of vehicle theft, possession of a firearm by a felon and additional charges.

Clear Lake police officers responded to a local motel on an anonymous tip that two men staying in a room at the motel had arrived in a truck stolen out of Missouri. When officers got to the motel, they found a truck with Missouri 

license plates. Contact was made with two men and two women from the Tulsa, Okla. area that were staying at the motel.

Weather shortens championship for young sailors

Weather limited the number of races able to be held during the 2012 USODA Great Plains Championship held Saturday and Sunday on Clear Lake.  The youth sailing event for sailors ages seven to 15 from across the Midwest was hosted by the Clear Lake Yacht Club.

 

Reporter subscription campaign kicks off Sept. 4

 

On Tuesday, Sept. 4, seven candidates will kick off the Mirror-Reporter’s semi-annual Subscription Campaign.  The candidates will be competing for cash prizes totaling over $5,000.

Grant will provide second beach cleaner

 

A second beach cleaner will be added to the arsenal local conservationists use to reduce bacteria levels at swim beaches.

Clear Lake has been named as one of 12 grant recipients chosen by The Watershed Improvement Review Board.  The Board recently approved applications totaling $946,952 in grants to support projects that will improve water
