Council OKs land purchase for water tower

 

The Clear Lake City Council voted Monday to purchase a one-acre piece of property for the purpose of constructing a new one million gallon elevated water tower on the site.

The city negotiated a purchase price of $75,000 for the parcel on the city’s northwest side.  The land is located 

west of K&H on Highway 18, about 300-feet from the current water tower in the Four Winds addition. The property is being purchased from Michael and Stacia Sonderman, of Clear Lake.

CLHS announces Preview Nights

The Clear Lake football program will be holding its annual preview night on Thursday, Aug. 16, starting at 5 p.m. at Lions Field.  The team and cheerleaders will be introduced.  The public is welcome to attend.  The Booster Club 

will be serving a meal for $5.

On Thursday, Aug. 23, the Clear Lake volleyball team will be holding its annual preview night starting at 6:30 p.m. in the high school gym.  The public is invited.

Three CL baseball players receive post season honors from Coaches Association

Three Clear Lake athletes have received honors from the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association.

Ozzie Adams was named to the Association’s Super Team.  Adams batted .492 this season.  He finished with 63 

hits, including five home runs, two triples and 24 doubles.  He had 40 RBIs, lifting his slugging percentage to .828.  When not pitching for the Lions, Adams played shortstop and posted a fielding percentage of .916.

Merlin Harner

 

Merlin Lester (Sonny) Harner, 82, of 1200 N. 9th St., Opportunity Village, Clear Lake, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012 at Opportunity Village.

A celebration of Merlin’s life was held on Monday, Aug.13, 2012 at Opportunity Village, Kenney-Lindstrom Center, Clear Lake with Pastor Rich Murray officiating.  Burial will be later in Harrison Twp., Swea City, Iowa.  Family suggests memorials to Opportunity Village Clear Lake.

Robert Ollenburg

 

Robert “Bob” Ollenburg, 85, of Ventura, Iowa, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2012 at the Concord Care Center in Garner, Iowa.

Funeral services are today (Wednesday, Aug. 15) at 10:30 a.m., at St. John’s Lutheran Church east of Garner with Rev. Carl Hedberg officiating.  Burial is in the church cemetery with military rites by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.  Cataldo Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Tad Venzke

 

Tad Clovis “Wheelz” Venzke, 22, of Manly, Iowa, died on Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012.  A funeral service for Tad will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 17, 2012 at Bethel United Methodist Church, 503 East South Street, Manly, with Pastor Don Preston officiating.  Burial will follow in the Manly Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., 

Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012 at the Bethel United Methodist Church and will continue one hour prior to the service on Friday.

The Clear Lake Police Department is continuing its tradition of including a K-9 officer on its staff.

Ready for parking

Lines have been painted and temporary parking is now allowed on the north side of the 16th Avenue South public access and boat ramp.  The measure is intended to provide much-needed parking for The Landing, owned by Gary and Diane Laabs.  The restaurant, which opened this summer, is part of the South Shore Inn, formerly known

 

City Council reviews extreme bids for projects

The Clear Lake City Council reviewed bids for local bridge and road work at its Monday, Aug. 6, meeting.  Extreme bids--at least one extremely favorable and others as expected or not quite as good, were approved.

Arraignment set for Lake man facing sex abuse charges

A Clear Lake man arrested and charged with Lascivious Acts with a Child, a Class D felony and Sexual Abuse in the Third Degree, a Class C felony, will be arraigned Aug. 20.

On Aug. 5,  Clear Lake police arrested 25-year-old Mason City resident David Powell II in a sting operation.  Powell showed up at a local motel thinking he was going to be meeting a 13-year-old Clear Lake girl for sex; instead he 

was met by police when he entered the motel room.
