Clear Lake players add skill to Mohawk Hockey Club

The Mohawk Hockey Club had a strong finish to the season, but couldn’t muster a win at the Midwest High School Hockey League Tournament.  The team, which features eight players on its roster from Clear Lake, dropped its quarterfinal round contest against 

Waterloo 11-2, and then fell in their consolation semifinal round contest to Lincoln, 2-1. 

Coach Mark Hicks said he was proud of his team’s effort this season.  After a slow start, the group won 12 of their last 14 matches and finished sixth in the 12-team Midwest High School Hockey League standings.  

According to Hicks, outstanding players on the team this year included CLHS senior Cody Maulsby, who tied for second in the league in scoring.  CLHS sophomore Anthony Piscopo was also one of the top goalies in the league, he added.

Other CLHS players on the team included: sophomores Ernest Miszewski, Tim Franken, Thomas Miller, Robby Hancock and Chanse Hollatz, along with freshman Nick Piscopo.

The Mohawk Hockey Club is run under the auspices of the Mason City Youth Hockey program, explained Hicks.  Junior varsity and varsity players come up through the ranks of that program and want to continue play in high school.  They follow the same rules as high school athletics, even earning letters for participation.  This year, 32 players from seven schools comprised the team.

The Mohawks ended their season with a record of 15-14-1-0.
