Trial delayed for man accused of soliciting to commit murder of teen

 

The trial of a Clear Lake man accused of solicitation to commit murder has been delayed until September.

Alan Cannon was charged in March with two counts of solicitation to commit murder, one count of conspiracy to commit murder and one count of attempted murder.  Cannon was charged in November 2011 with third-degree 

sexual abuse and supplying alcohol to a minor, and is accused of offering money to two men in December to kill the 16-year-old girl who was the alleged victim in the sexual abuse case.

Clear Lake Head Baseball Coach Seth Thompson led the Small School East team, which included two Clear Lake Lions, to a runner-up finish at the 36th Annual All-Star Series played Aug. 2-5 in Clinton, Iowa.  

Robert Seefeld

 

Robert “Bob” Seefeld, 73, of 2213 14th Place N., Clear Lake, Iowa, formerly Wesley, Iowa, passed away Friday, Aug. 3, 2012 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa, after a courageous 14-month battle with cancer.

     Funeral services for Bob were held on Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012 at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake with Rev. Dean C. Hess officiating.  Burial was at Evergreen Cemetery in Wesley.

Jimmy Lee Leasure

 

Jimmy “Jim” Lee Leasure, 73, 210 W. 10th Ave., N., Clear Lake, Iowa, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012 at the North Iowa Mercy Medical Center, Mason City, Iowa.  

     A Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 8, at Galilean Lutheran Church, Hwy 18 W., Clear Lake, with Rev. Randy Baldwin officiating.  Visitation will be one hour before the service on Wednesday at the 

church.   Military Honors will be provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W.  Memorials may be given to Jimmy Lee Leasure Memorial Fund.

Ann Joslyn Hall Murray

 

Ann Joslyn Hall Murray, 61, of Iowa City, died Aug. 4, 2012 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

     She was born Aug.12, 1951 in Independence, Iowa, the daughter of Reeves and Alberta (Joslyn) Hall.  Ann had two brothers, David and Jim.  Ann was the middle child. Ann’s brothers delighted in calling her “Mother Ann”

 because they maintain she was quick to take matters into her own hands when her brothers misbehaved!  Ann attended school in Independence and college at Mankato State where she majored in elementary education. 

Thomas Simmering

 

Thomas “Tom” Simmering, 64, of 1323 N. Shore Dr., Clear Lake, Iowa, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2012 in Kenora, Ontario, Canada, while on his 42nd annual fishing trip with lifelong friends. 

     Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug.11, 2012 at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. 4th St., Clear Lake, with Rev. Derik Yarian officiating.  Visitation will be Friday from 3 p.m.-7 p.m. at the Ward-Van Slyke

City approves parking at lake access-- for now

Councilman Terry Unsworth called it “an immediate problem in search of a long term solution.”  

Monday night the Clear Lake City Council dealt with a business’ parking problems by approving a short term fix.  On a 5-0 vote the group approved temporary parking on the north side of the 16th Avenue South public access 

and boat ramp.  The measure is intended to provide much-needed parking for The Landing, owned by Gary and Diane Laabs.  The restaurant, which opened this summer, is part of the South Shore Inn, formerly known as The Heartland Inn.

Sting operation at local motel foils man’s plan to meet 13-year-old

 

On Sunday, Aug. 5,  Clear Lake police arrested 25-year-old Mason City resident David Powell II for Lascivious Acts with a Child, a Class D felony and Sexual Abuse in the Third Degree, a Class C felony.
