Norman McClary

Norman Ray “Norm” McClary, 67, of Clear Lake died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral service for Norman will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013 at the Clear Lake 

United Methodist Church, 508 2nd Avenue N., Clear Lake with the Rev. Bernie Colorado officiating.  Burial will follow in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Elmer P. Reicherts

Elmer P. Reicherts, 78, of Swaledale, Iowa, died Friday, Nov.1, 2013 at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home in Rockwell, Iowa.

Per Elmer’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded and a memorial service will be held at

 11 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013 at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kenneth B. Gehling officiating.  

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Elmer P. Reicherts Memorial Fund in care of his family.

Larry Kriegh

Larry Kriegh, 74, of Ankeny, Iowa, passed away Oct. 30, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.  He was born April 24, 1939 on a farm in Delphos, Kan., the son of Wayne and Ruth Kriegh.

Larry graduated from Minneapolis, Kansas High School and attended Kansas State University.  He was a land developer and a franchisee for Pizza Hut in several states. He was also a boating and race car enthusiast. He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity and love of people.

Mary Ann Harrington

Mrs. Mary Ann Harrington, 80, of Mountain Home, Ark., passed away Monday, Nov. 4, 2013 in Mountain Home. She was born July 4, 1933 in Chicago, Ill., to Frank and Lillian Flusek. She 

married William Harrington in Ventura, Iowa, in 1952.

  In her younger days, Mrs. Harrington enjoyed snowmobiling and cross country skiing. She was a bookkeeper for a lumber yard for over 20 years.  She was also a long-time Avon saleswoman and a seamstress.  She was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church.

Willi O. Beckmann

Willi O. Beckmann, 92, 909 Main Ave., Clear Lake, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013 at the Heritage Care Center, Mason City.  A Memorial Service was held on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura, with Rev. Daird Korth officiating.  According to his wishes 

his body has been cremated.  A private graveside service was held in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

John I. Moor

Board approves bringing drug dogs into high school

The Clear Lake School Board has given its unanimous approval to a request to bring drug dogs into the high school building.

Sidewalk projects a priority for City Council

On a 4-1 vote the Clear Lake City Council agreed to hire Veenstra & Kimm Engineering of Mason City, at a cost of $32,500, to prepare a strategic plan to evaluate and prioritize sidewalk projects in Clear Lake.  

The one dissenting vote came from councilman Jim Boehnke who said he felt the city had enough capable people to do the plan "in house."  

Default judgement filed against man who struck Clear Lake police car

A default judgment has been entered in Cerro Gordo County District Court against a man who was driving while intoxicated and struck a police car driven by Clear Lake Policeman Lt. Paul Chizek.  The judgment awards $8,890.36 to the City of Clear Lake.

The city filed the suit against Steven Orta, 22, of Mason City, who was driving a pickup which struck Lt. Chizek’s vehicle just after 2 a.m. April 19, 2013 on Highway 18, Clear Lake.  

Ventura Protective Association to transfer ownership

The Ventura Protective Association and Ventura City Council have begun talks which will likely result in the transfer of ownership of the fire department July 1, 2014.

Ventura Fire Chief John Quintus explained the Protective Association, formed in 1946 and one of only a handful of private entities to offer fire service, cannot continue to survive due to growing financial demands.  Members of the group have voted to disband July 1, 2014.  The City of Ventura would begin ownership of the department at that time, the start of the fiscal year.
