City posts stellar financial report (again)

The City of Clear Lake could probably teach the federal government a thing or two about fiscal responsibility.

Again in fiscal year 2013 the City excels in limiting its debt.  Monday night City Administrator Scott Flory presented the Annual Financial Report which will be submitted to the Iowa Department of Management and the State Auditor’s Office. 

Ventura, G-H School Boards will draw up petitions for vote

The Ventura and Garner-Hayfield School Boards have agreed to have an attorney draw up language for petitions needed to start the process for consolidation of the two districts. 

If the petitions are signed by 304 registered voters in the Ventura School District and 400 voters in the Garner-Hayfield District, a vote will be scheduled for consolidation.

End to an impressive season

So close.  Following an outstanding season and an impressive run in the postseason, the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura volleyball team fell in a Class 3A Regional semifinal to Sheldon on Tuesday night, Nov. 5, in Estherville.

The Cardinals gave it their all, but in the end they found out how the Orabs earned their number two rating.

“Sheldon ran a quick offense and we were unable to get our side clicking,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens.

Kibsgaard and Hewett earn post season recognition

Bailey Kibsgaard and Katie Hewett earned post season honors for the Clear Lake volleyball team.  Kibsgaard was named Second Team All-Conference and Hewett earned Honorable Mention recognition for the North Central Conference.

Kibsgaard, a senior, led the team in kills with 141 for the season.  She had 193 successful serves with 20 aces.  She also recorded 74 blocks and 117 digs for the Lions.

Five Cardinals named to All Conference teams

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura volleyball team had five girls named to the All Conference team. Seniors Emily Mathews and Courtney Younge earned First Team recognition.  Senior Shelby Rayhons and  freshman Hannah Lau were named to the Second Team and Mallory Van Oort, a junior, earned Honorable Mention recognition.

Mathews, who was one of three unanimous choices for First Team, led the team in several categories, including kills with 276, ace serves with 43, total blocks with 75 and digs with 118.

Bristol named USA Rugby Collegiate All-American

Cadet 1st Class Jackson Bristol has been named USA Rugby Collegiate All-American for 2013 and was featured in Rugby Magazine’s 2013 Men’s Collegiate All-Americans list for being among the “best of the best” in college rugby.

Bristol is the son of Richard and Sue (Kennedy) Bristol, of Denver, Colo., and grandson of Wanda and Jack Kennedy, Clear Lake.

Joan M. Dirksen

Joan M. Dirksen, 81, of Clear Lake, passed away Sunday, Nov. 10, 2013 at Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City.  A funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013 at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.  Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa in Joan’s memory.

Frances Elizabeth Miller, 84, of Ventura, died Friday Nov. 8, 2013 at the Muse Norris Hospice

 Inpatient Unit, Mason City.  Services are pending at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake.
