The need is great; Ornaments remain on Giving Tree

Approximately 75 ornaments remain on the 24th annual Giving Tree on display in the Mirror-Reporter office, 12 N. 4th St.

This year the tree featured approximately 200 ornaments representing the wishes of local children and families.  In the 23 years that the Mirror-Reporter has housed the tree, needs have never been left unmet.  In fact, those choosing 

ornaments often remark that they had more fun shopping for someone they didn’t know than someone they did. 

Lions earn post season recognition

As expected, Class 3A District 3 champion Clear Lake led the balloting for All-District players.  The Lions placed six players on the First Team All-District offense and six on the defense.

The Lion defense is represented by Chandler Diercks, defensive back; Zach Zwiefel, defensive line; Pete Swenson, inside linebacker; Tim Franken, outside linebacker/defensive end; Connor Nosbisch, outside linebacker/defensive end; and 

Chase Lester, utility.

Clear Lake and GHV girls earn pre-season rankings

Lions ranked 9th; Cardinals 11th

The Clear Lake and Garner-Hayfield/Ventura teams both appear in pre-season rankings released by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Friday, Nov. 22.

Area football players earn All-State honors

Three members of the Clear Lake football team and one member of the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura football team were named to the Iowa Newspaper Association’s 2013 All-State Football selections Tuesday, Nov. 26.  

GHV girls open season with a scrimmage against Mohawks

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls basketball team tipped off their season on Tuesday, Nov. 19, when they traveled to Mason City for a Hall of Pride Scrimmage against the Mohawks.

Lake declared frozen Nov. 25

Clear Lake was officially declared “iced-in” Monday, Nov. 25, according to Water Plant Superintendent Greg Farwell.  The

 last measure of the lake level was -7.68 inches below the weir on Nov. 18.  In 2012 the lake was declared frozen Dec. 11.  At that time the lake level was measured at -31.44 inches below the weir.

Volunteers are busy building a Christmas By The Lake celebration that will draw thousandsSanta has his elves to help him get ready for a busy Christmas season.  But what about Clear Lake?  Who gets the community ready to host thousands for the annual Christmas By The Lake celebration?

 

Vangaard Squadron will fly over festival

This year’s Christmas By the Lake Lighted Parade Dec. 7 will be preceded by a fly-over conducted by  the ethanol-powered Vanguard Squadron.  The Vanguard Squadron has been powered by ethanol since it started in 1993.

Nutcracker ballet showcases local talent

Four Clear Lake youngsters have seized the opportunity to take the stage with members of the Minnesota Ballet to present the Nutcracker Saturday, Dec. 7, on the North Iowa Community Auditorium stage.

Savannah Williams and Sky Toyne are best friends who will be playing best friends in the show.  The 11-year-olds have been cast in the production as dancers.  Savannah will be playing young Clara, while Sky will perform in the large party 

Board approves drug dog use in schools

Letters are being sent to parents of Clear Lake Middle and High School students advising them of the school district’s plan to allow local law enforcement to use canines to search school buildings for illegal substances.

The canine training activity has been in discussion for more than a year and the letter to parents about the measure was 

approved at Monday’s School Board meeting, pending review by the district’s attorney.
