Girls cruise to fifth straight win

Five players scored in double figures, helping the Clear Lake girls to a 67-38 win over Bishop Garrigan Tuesday, Dec. 17.  The win was the fifth straight for the Lions, who are ranked seventh in Class 3A.

Ugly fourth quarter costs Cardinals a win

  An ugly fourth quarter led to the demise of the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys when they faced Osage (1-2, 4-2) on Tuesday, Dec. 19.

The first quarter saw both teams trading baskets and playing evenly, as the quarter ended in a 13-13 draw.  Osage began to pull a head in the second quarter and took a 32-28 lead into halftime.

Clear Lake wrestlers move to 4-0 in NCC

A come-from-behind victory over Clarion-Goldfield Thursday keeps the Clear Lake wrestling team remains in first place in North Central Conference heading into the holiday break.

On the road at Clarion, the meet started at 145 and the Cowboys won the first three weights, opening up a 9-0 lead. 

Birthday boy Logan Wilcke got the Lions on the board with a 2-0 win. Connor Nosbisch won by major decision, pulling the Lions to within 9-7.  

Lions now ranked #3 in Class 3A

Clear Lake used a 17-5 second quarter to surge ahead of Bishop Garrigan and capture a 57-49 North Central Conference victory Tuesday, Dec. 17.  The win kept the Lions perfect so far this season at 5-0 and ranked number three in Class 3A.

Early deadlines in effect for next two weeks

Early deadlines will be in effect for the next two issues of the Clear Lake Mirror-Reporter due to the Christmas and New Year’s holiday.  All news and advertising is due on Friday, rather than Monday, both weeks.  The newspaper will arrive in mailboxes 

on Tuesday, Dec. 24, and Tuesday, Dec. 31, instead of the usual Wednesday delivery.

The Mirror-Reporter office will be open 9 a.m. to noon Christmas Eve Tuesday.

James L. Cox

  James LeRoy Cox, age 72, died Nov. 30, 2013 after suffering a stroke at his home in Redstone, Colo.  Jim was born Jan. 19, 1941 in Rockwell, Iowa, to Cecil (Kid) and Emma Cox.  

A memorial service to celebrate Jim’s life will be held at the Good Shepard Lutheran Church in Glenwwood Springs, Colo., on Dec. 21, 2013.  Jim was cremated and the family will spread his ashes in Redstone.  Memorials may be directed to the Salvation Army.

Gerald A. Wass

Gerald Alan “Gerry” Wass, age 60, of Denver, Iowa, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, Iowa, after a courageous battle against prostate cancer.

Ventura fire service area still in question

One township fails to return new contract

Fire protection services remain up in the air for a portion of one township served by the soon-to-be disbanded Ventura Protective Association.

According to VPA Fire Chief and Ventura City Council member John Quintus, the Dec. 10 deadline given to townships served by the VPA has passed without a signed contract from the Clear Lake Township for fire protection services with 

Community Kitchen location changing

The Clear Lake Community Kitchen serves a hot meal each Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.  Mondays and Fridays the meal is served in the Fellowship Hall at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. 4th St.  The Wednesday meal has been served for the past years at the Clear Lake Senior Citizens Center.
