Girls tennis team tops IF-A; falls to Mason City

The Clear Lake girls tennis team opened its season with a split against North Iowa competition.  The Lions fell in a close match with Mason City, but then soundly defeated Iowa Falls.

Lunning and Heinemann lead GHV boys golf team

It was a good start to the 2014 golf season for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys golf team, topping West Hancock on Friday, April 11, at the Britt Country Club. The Cardinals won by a whopping 87 strokes, 167-254.
 Mitch Lunning’s 39 led the team and gave him medalist honors.

Clear Lake boys tennis team opens with two wins

The Clear Lake boys tennis team recorded identical 7-2 victories over Iowa Falls-Alden and Mason City during their first week of action.

The Lions won four of six singles matches and swept the doubles on their way to a 7-2 victory over Iowa Falls-Alden on Thursday, April 10.  

GHV girls blank opponent, 10-0

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls soccer team opened the 2014 season strong on Monday, April 7, by shutting out CAL/Hampton-Dumont/Belmond-Klemme 10-0.

“Anytime you score 10 goals and only allow one shot on goal, it is a good day,” said Coach Josh Banse.  “We played very well on both sides of the field.”

Despite the weather, which was breezy and very cold, and the fact that the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls golf team has not been on a course yet this season, Monday night’s meet with Clarion-Goldfield could have been worse.  As it was, C-G topped GHV by only four strokes, 208-212, in the first meet of the season.

Duane A. Kuhlers

Duane A. Kuhlers, 83, of Clear Lake, died Friday, April 11, 2014 at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.  A funeral service for Duane will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 18, 2014 at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, 508 2nd Ave. N., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Bernie Colorado and Dr. Rev.

Betty L. Thomas

Betty L. Thomas, 90, of Clear Lake, died Sunday, April 6, 2014 at the Oakwood Care Center in  Clear Lake.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, April 12, at Galilean Lutheran Church, in Clear Lake, with Rev. Scott McCluskey officiating.   Her body was donated to the University of Iowa Department Of Anatomy.  Inurnment will be at a later date at the Clear Lake Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Galilean Lutheran Church, Zion Lutheran Church or the Clear Lake Library.

Alice K. Thompson

Alice Katherine (Juhl) Thompson passed away on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at age 95.  Alice’s memorial service was held Saturday, April 12, 2014, at the Tacoma Lutheran Retirement Community, 1310 N. Highlands Pkwy., Tacoma, Wash. 

She was born in Iowa on May 8, 1918, to Axel and Katherine Juhl. She graduated from high school at age 16, and from Waldorf Lutheran College at age 18.  Her first teaching job was in a small rural school in Iowa with all grades in one room.

Michael D. Allison

Michael Douglas Allison, 73, 4645 N. Shore Dr., Clear Lake, formerly of Rockford, Iowa, died Thursday, April 10, 2014 at the North Iowa Mercy Medical Center, Mason City.

     A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 16, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 1001 9th Ave. S., Clear Lake, with Rev. John Gossman officiating.  Visitation will be one hour preceding the service at the church.  Inurnment will be at Elmwood Cemetery, Mason City. Memorials may be given to the Michael Allison Memorial Fund.

Joseph R. McIlhon

Joseph Robert McIlhon, 32,  passed away at home on Friday, April 11, 2014.  A Rite of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 17, 2014 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Beaver Ave. in Des Moines, Iowa, with internment following at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.  Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16, at Iles Dunn’s Chapel with a vigil at 7 p.m. and also one hour prior to the service Thursday.
