GHV girls split golf meets; O’Hara medalist at Britt
GHV vs. C-G
Despite the weather, which was breezy and very cold, and the fact that the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls golf team has not been on a course yet this season, Monday night’s meet with Clarion-Goldfield could have been worse. As it was, C-G topped GHV by only four strokes, 208-212, in the first meet of the season.
“I didn’t have real high expectations entering this meet, since the girls had not played a hole this season,” said Coach Todd Greiman. “Overall, a team score of 212 with very limited practice time and virtually no time on a green is not bad at all.”
Madee Hejna and Kyleigh Slaichert both led the team with scores of 50. Kim Dornbier recorded a 54, while Whitney Watson had a 58 and Tamara O’Hara shot a 62. The Cardinals are hoping to find a sixth girl to fill out the varsity roster before the next meet.
“All five girls have room for improvement, so hopefully we’ll get an opportunity to work on the parts of the game that need help,” said Greiman.
GHV vs. West Hancock
On Friday, April 11, the team traveled to the Britt Golf Course to play West Hancock. Only one girl competed for West Hancock, so there was no team score.
“Knowing that we wouldn’t have any competition may have caused the girls to let up a bit,” said Greiman. “I was hoping that we’d be able to score about five to seven strokes better as a team.”
O’Hara had a good night for the Cardinals, shooting a 51 for medalist honors. Hejna was the runner-up with a 53. Rounding out the scoring was Watson with a 54, Dornbier carded a 55 and Slaichert shot a 56.
The Cards travel to Mason City on Monday, April 21, where they face Belmond-Klemme, Newman Catholic and North Iowa.
