Smith, GHV boys win title at NI Conference Meet

Chase Smith captured first place at the North Iowa Conference Cross Country Meet Thursday at Belmond and helped his team easily outdistance Eagle Grove for top honors.  The Cardinals won with 46 points, followed by the Eagles with 84 and Osage with 88.  The remainder of the field included: Bishop Garrigan (129), North Iowa (142), Forest City (153), Lake Mills (174), Newman (202) and B-K (211).

“I was very proud with how both teams raced,” said Coach Erik Jolivette.  “Most of our athletes finished the season with their best race of the year.”

Silver Boot tenants ordered out

After weeks of contention, residents of the Silver Boot Motel were ordered from the premises Tuesday morning, Oct. 21.

Committee formed to study veteran’s memorial sites

Clear Lake Mayor Nelson Crabb announced Monday a committee has been chosen to study the hotly debated location for a proposed Veteran’s Memorial.

Crabb told the City Council a seven-member committee is in place to review all possible location for a Veteran’s Memorial and make a recommendation to the Council.

Partnership ignites creative spirit in local artist

Since June 2014, the kiln in Walker 3-D Studio at the Clear Lake Arts Center has been working overtime.  A partnership with Steve and Marilyn Johnson allowed the Arts Center to have an Artist-in-Residence program.  The artist, Alec Heggen a 2014 graduate of Clear Lake High School, worked a minimum of three mornings a week for eight weeks and the public was invited to watch.

Neva S. McDonald

Neva S. McDonald, formerly of Clear Lake, passed away in Escondido, Calif., on Oct. 5, 2014, as a result of Alzheimers disease.  She was 94.

Neva Shirley Smith was born in Hudson, S.D., on Sept. 1, 1920, the daughter of Ross and Myrtle (Miner) Smith.  She spent her childhood in the Hudson area where Neva met her lifetime sweetheart, Dennis Wayne McDonald, son of Charles R. McDonald and Amy R. Edson.  Neva and Dennis were married in 1939, and they enjoyed a long and happy life together (over 70 years).  Dennis died in March of 2010.    

Orin J. Solbrack

Orin Juel Solbrack, 72, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014, at the Oakwood Care Center, in Clear Lake.

A Memorial Service and celebration of his life, was held in the Severtson Forum of the Kinney-Lindstrom Center at Opportunity Village, Clear Lake, on Friday, Oct. 10, 2014, with Pastor Rich Murray officiating. Inurnment was held in the Salem Memorial Cemetery.    

Those wishing to give a memorial in his memory, may wish to consider contributions to Opportunity Village. 

Mildred A. Jensen

Mildred “Millie” Ann (DeVries) Jensen, 83, of Thornton, Iowa, passed away on Monday, Oct. 6, 2014, at her home, under hospice care, surrounded by her loving family.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Oct. 9, at Retz Funeral Home, in Thornton, with Mr. Gerald Haugland presiding.  Interment was at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Thornton.

Mildred was born Nov. 8, 1930, in Sheffield, Iowa, to Jerry and Lena (Schroeder) DeVries.  Mildred graduated from the Thornton Consolidated School in 1949 with high honors.

Norman J. Ballantyne

Norman J. “Bill” Ballantyne, 91, of Clear Lake, died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2014, with his family by his side at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Friday, Oct. 17, 2014, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating.  Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.  Family will greet friends one hour before the service.  The family suggests memorials to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
