Council members give themselves a pay raise

 

Clear Lake City Council members will be getting a raise, effective Jan. 1, 2014.

The last time the compensation for City Council members was adjusted was in 1999, according to City Administrator Scott Flory.  At that time, pay was increased from $25 per meeting to $50 per meeting.  Flory estimates there are about 30 Council meetings held during the year.

No name yet for Rec Area

 

Clear Lake Parks and Recreation Department Board members are mulling over about six potential names for its recreation area located on 12th Avenue South.

P&R Department Director Randy Miller said Board members discussed names suggested by the public for the area, but 

reached no decision at their March 27 meeting.  The group decided to think about the ideas and will vote at their next meeting, slated for April 24.

City’s Large Item Pickup begins next week

 

Spring must surely be here-- it’s time for the city’s Spring Large Item Pickup.

Residents are encouraged to dispose of large items that cannot be discarded through their weekly garbage service by putting them at the curb for pickup Monday-Wednesday, April 8-10.  The Large Item Pickup map  appears in this edition

 of the Mirror-Reporter on page 13, listing the dates the City will pick up in areas of the city and the items that will and will not be picked up.

Clyde L. Johnson

 

Clyde L. Johnson, 76, of Clear Lake, Iowa died Monday March 25, 2013 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, 

Mason City, Iowa.  Services are pending at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake, Iowa. 641-357-2193.

Jimmie Brown

 

Jimmie McGill Barber Brown, 84, passed from this life on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013 at Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City, Iowa.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at Madill Church of Christ at 11 a.m. in Madill, Okla., with Basil McClure, nephew-in-law, officiating.  Interment will be at the Oakland Cemetery, Oakland, Okla.

Joel Laaveg

 

Joel Laaveg, 58, Clear Lake, passed away in the early morning hours on Friday, March 22, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.  A Celebration of Life service was held at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City on Sunday, March 24,with Rev. Rod Hopp officiating.  Joel was laid to rest on Monday, March 25, at the Clear Lake Cemetery. 

 Memorials may be made to the Joel Laaveg Memorial to be shared with various ministries, or those of your choice.  

Track team competes in Dickinson Relays

 

Selected members of the Clear Lake boys track team got their season started Tuesday, March 19, competing in the Dickinson Relays in the UNI Dome at Cedar Falls.

Hamilton to play in Iowa Shrine All-Star football game

 

Clear Lake High School football standout Bryson Hamilton will be playing in the 2013 Iowa Shrine All-Star football game July 27 at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls.

The goal of the Iowa Shrine All-Star football game is to raise money to benefit Shriners’ hospitals for Children.  Their motto is “Stong legs run, so weak legs may walk.”

Three area athletes compete for NIACC at Grand View Relays

 

The NIACC men’s and women’s track teams opened their outdoor season on Saturday, March 23, at the Grand View Relays. 

Three former Clear Lake High School athletes are competing for NIACC this season and ran at the Grand View Relays. Nicholas DiMarco ran the 10,000, while Stephanie Faught ran the 1,500 and Rebecca Baker competed in the 5,000.  Faught also ran the anchor leg of the 4x400 relay.

The men picked up three first place finishes at the Grand View Viking Relays.  The women captured one first place finish.
