Cards drop final game of season

 

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls soccer team dropped the final game of the season to Gladbrook-Reinbeck, 10-0.

“Gladbrook is a very tough team and they are well coached,” said Coach Josh Banse.

Goalie Sam Betz had 14 saves for the Cards.  Bri Bier and Emily Spilman each had two shots on goal.

The Cardinals will say good-bye to seniors Jesslyn Prohaska, Bethany Nannenga, Kelly Babcock, Renae Lau and Sarah Marmaro.

John Swanberg

 

John Andrew Swanberg passed away on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home in Fort Dodge, Iowa, at the age of 76 years.  

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove, Iowa, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Jason Cooper officiating.    

Jones places eighth in Class 1A State Tennis Meet

 

Clear Lake’s Sam Jones earned an eighth place finish at the Class 1A State Tennis Meet played Friday and Saturday in Waterloo.

Jones, the only freshman in the Class 1A singles field, opened the tourney with a win over last year’s sixth place finisher, Will Hamilton, from Grinnell.  Jones pulled out a

Creston-Orient/Macksburg overcame a three stroke lead held by the Clear Lake boys golf team after the first day of State competition and won the Class 3A title Saturday in Ames.  The Lions, with two players in the top six, finished third.

Clarion-Goldfield held the Cardinals scoreless in the first game of the year with a score of 10-0.

Lions show promise in opener

 

The Clear Lake baseball team opened the season with a promising performance, then tested their mettle against Class 1A’s preseason number one team in the opening week of the season.

The Lions opened the season with a bang, shocking Charles City 11-1 Monday, May 20, at Lions Field.

G-H/V soccer boys split Sub-State games

 

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys soccer team won the first Sub-State game in the program’s three year history when they defeated West Sioux, 2-1.

Brad Nedved scored the team’s first goal early in the first half on a shot that bounced around in front of the net.  West Sioux returned the favor to knot the game, 1-1.  Neither scored the remainder of the game, sending the match into overtime.

Miserable start to the season for CL softball team

 

Central Springs gave the Clear Lake girls softball team a rough start to the 2013 season, walloping the Lions 17-1 in three rainy and cold innings played Wednesday, May 22.

 

G-H/V girls drop two close soccer contests

 

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls soccer team dropped two close contests last week.

Webster City 3, G-H/V 2

The Cardinals dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker to Webster City. 

“I am so proud of how our girls kept their head up and left it all on the field,” said Coach Josh Banse.  “All the girls are playing very well as a team.”

CL boys soccer team falls in Sub-State

 

Third-ranked (Class 2A) Hudson ended the season for the Clear Lake boys in Sub-State soccer action Wednesday, May 22.

Hudson, playing on its home field, defeated the Lions 2-1 in the Sub-State semi-final.

The Pirates advanced to face No. 16 Waverly-Shell Rock Saturday and were defeated by the Go-Hawks,

 2-0.  W-SR will play in the State tournament starting May 30 at Cowie State Park in Des Moines.

Further details of the Clear Lake match with Hudson were not available at press time.
