Rock Around the Clock
Rock and roll fans from all over the world spent a fun-filled week rocking around the clock at the Surf Ballroom and Museum’s annual Winter Dance Party.
The event was again a sell-out, featuring three full nights of live entertainment as well as a sock hop, dance party for local students and days filled with learning opportunities and outings.
“I think this may have been the best overall package of entertainment they’ve ever had,” said John Stinson, from Minnesota, who said he has attended more than 15 Winter Dance Parties. “Frankie Avalon was probably the highlight for me-- and my wife. She loved him as a teenager and I don’t think he’s lost a beat. She was in heaven.”
Avalon said he has not played at the Surf before, but was aware of it’s significance in rock and roll history. Avalon said he worked with Buddy Holly, J.P. Richardson “The Big Bopper,” and Ritchie Valens a number of times before the tragic plane accident happened in 1959. Seeing all of the memorabilia from their past displayed at the Surf touched the performer deeply.
“This is the original,” he said. “You can’t get any more original with memories than the Surf Ballroom.” Avalon said he was honored to be asked to headline the 36th annual event and he looked forward to his performance. “I feel absolutely lucky. The fact that I’ve been doing this for so many years, and people just keep asking and wanting to hear some of the songs and music that I did, and reminisce of some of the films that I’ve done, and all of that stuff so, it’s great.”
Avalon was also pleased the Surf has made the education of today’s youngsters and teens such an important part of its mission. - Read More Via e-Edition
