    Gail Marie Johnson, 83, of 5 Woodlane Dr. Clear Lake, formerly of Moline, Ill., died Friday, Oct. 7, 2011 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
    Memorial services will be 1 p.m., Friday, Oct. 14, at the Elim Covenant Church, Moline, with Pastor Darren Olson officiating. Inurnment will be in Moline Memorial Park Cemetery.

    Roy David Bird, 64, of 1321 3rd Avenue North, Clear Lake, died Friday, Oct. 7, 2011 at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa.
    A celebration of Roy’s life was held Monday, Oct. 10, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, Iowa.

    Helen “Jean” (Lattimer) Casey died on Monday, Oct. 3, 2011, at Heritage Care Center, Mason City, Iowa.
    A Funeral Mass was held Friday, Oct. 7, at St. Joseph Catholic Church.  The Funeral Mass was celebrated by the Rev. Michael Schueller and concelebrated by the Rev. Msgr. Joseph J. Slepicka.

The battle between Class 3A’s number one and number two ranked teams lived up to its billing.  
    After a fast and furious start, during which the Lynx turned the ball over three times and helped the Lions to a commanding 21-7 lead, Webster City rallied in the second half and finished just one point short of the upset, 28-27.

Lion volleyball team keeps showing improvement

Coach Scott Swenson is a believer.  
    “We believe that the teams that stay the course and continue to work the hardest, will have  good things happen for them,” said Swenson.   “We know sooner or later, all of a sudden, we will start to get the breaks.”

Lady Vikes get victory over HLP in busy week

Ventura volleyball fans had the opportunity to cheer their team on at three home matches last week.  The Lady Vikes bounced back from a Monday night loss to Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock to post a win over Harris Lake Park on Tuesday.  The week ended with a hard-fought match with Garner-Hayfield.

Ventura runners at EG meet

The boys and girls Garner-Hayfield/Ventura/West Hancock cross country teams competed at the Eagle Grove Meet on Tuesday, Oct. 4.  The girls placed first out of nine teams with 53 points.  The boys were third with 81 points, behind Gilbert with 50 and Spencer with 80.

    Kamille Kroneman led the girl’s team with a fourth place finish in 15:01.  Maddie Tusha wasn’t far behind with a sixth place finish in 15:52.

Lion runners bunch toward the top for good results

Clear Lake runners are using the strength in numbers approach to earn some good placements
    “As a group, they keep pushing each other in the race and running close to each other.  That’s helping to move everyone closer to the top,” said Coaches Jerry Morris and Lothar Meyer. 
    The teams competed Wednesday, Oct. 5, at Eagle Grove.  The Clear Lake girls teams finished fifth in overall standings, while the boys were seventh.
