Lions give it their all, but Go-Hawks capture win

The Clear Lake boys gave number two ranked (3A) Waverly-Shell Rock all they could handle, but fell just short of an upset in a District 5 final played Thursday, Feb. 23 at Mason City.  The Go-Hawks (22-1) used free throws down the stretch to squeeze out a 70-63 victory.  The Lions finished the season with a 12-11 record.

Denise Powers

    Denise Renee (Clapper) Powers, 47, of 115 Little Ojai Dr., Indian Mound, Tenn., died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012 at Blanchfield Army Hospital in Fort Campbell, Ky, after a courageous battle with cancer.
    Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 20, at Dyers Creek Church of God with the Rev. Jeff Wallace officiating.

Deloris Bourne

    Deloris K. Swearingen Bourne (Del), 80 years old, of Clear Lake, passed away Feb. 25, 2012 at Hospice House of North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa of natural causes. 
    Del was born Dec. 26, 1932 in Ames, Iowa. On June 11, 1949 she married Alvin Bourne (Al) and the two of them were blessed with one daughter, Linda, on June 14, 1957.

Jesse Richardson

    Jesse Lee Yun Richardson, 17, of 11418 Jonquil Ave., Clear Lake, died Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012 at his home.
    Funeral services were held Tuesday Feb. 28, at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church with the Rev. Diana Hoover officiating.   Interment was in Clear Lake Cemetery. Family suggests memorials go to the Jesse Lee Yun Richardson Memorial Fund. Jesse’s final act was to give the gift of life through organ donation.

Clear Lake man ordered to pay $2.3 million

Fraudulent grain receipts, false statements used to obtain bank loans

    A Clear Lake man who made false statements to obtain loans from a bank has been ordered by U.S. District Court Judge Linda Reade to repay $2.3 million in restitution to three financial institutions.
    Michael Dean Olk, 56, was convicted in September 2011 of using fraudulent grain receipts as collateral for two bank loans. Friday, Feb. 24, he was sentenced on one count of making a false statement to a federally-insured financial institution.

School Board settles on 2012-13 calendar

    The school year will start a bit later for Clear Lake students in the fall.
    After much discussion, the Clear Lake School Board voted Monday to set the start date for the 2012-13 school year as Monday, Aug. 20.  The school year will conclude Friday, May 24.  Any snow days incurred will be made up after the Memorial Day holiday.

Kellogg and Bieber get places on the podium

Clear Lake seniors Logan Kellogg and Matt Bieber ended their high school wrestling careers with outstanding performances at the State Wrestling Meet in Des Moines.  Kellogg battled all the way back from an opening round loss to finish third at 182-pounds.  Bieber earned fifth place in the 120-pound bracket.
