Council advances ordinance to prohibit feeding waterfowl

 

The Clear Lake City Council will consider the second reading of a proposed ordinance that would prohibit the feeding of waterfowl at or within 300-feet of any City ­owned and maintained recreation area when it meets on Monday, May 20.

The Council introduced the proposed ordinance at its May 6 meeting.

Nate Carney, president of the Board of Directors of the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, was the only person who spoke to the proposal.  He said the Board endorsed the idea.

Clear Lake firefighters responded to a report of a vehicle engulfed in flames at mile marker 188 southbound on Interstate 35 at approximately 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 10.

Duesenberg honored for work with families

Clear Lake families have a good friend in Sally Duesenberg.

Strength, conditioning program may continue into school year

 

The Clear Lake School Board is expected to extend a weight training program, overseen by a paid professional, from a summer camp experience into the regular school year.

Volunteer Coach Jared DeVries and Activities Director Dale Ludwig spoke with the Board Monday night and shared a plan which they say will help athletes, as well as students in general, become more 

physically fit and encourage general wellness. 

Marian Bartleson

 

Marian O. Bartleson, 87, of Clear Lake, died Monday, April 29, 2013 at the Britt Medical Center in Britt, Iowa.

A funeral service for Marian was held, Thursday, May 2, 2013 at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake with the Reverend Derek Yarian officiating.  Burial followed in the Clear Lake Cemetery.  Should friends desire, memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.

Janis C. Joslyn

 

Janis C. Joslyn, age 85, of Clear Lake, passed away on April 30, 2013.

  She is survived by her husband, Dr. Tom Joslyn; daughter, Jane (Todd) Gruis of Clear Lake; sons, Tom (Susann) of Kailua, Hawaii, Dr. Paul (Theresa) of LaCrosse, Wis., and James (Pamela) of Muscatine,

 Iowa; grandchildren, Michael and Thomas Gruis, Sarah and Elizabeth Joslyn, Jennifer, Ann, Grant, and Katharine Joslyn, and Eli Joslyn; and sister, Karen Ausenhus of Omaha, Neb.

Gloria Dean Goerish

 

Gloria Dean Goerish, 73, Clear Lake, died Sunday, May 5, 2013 at her home.

A funeral mass for Gloria will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 10, 2013 at the St. Patrick’s Catholic 

Jerry Toppin

 

Jerry L. Toppin, 56, of Ventura, died at his home.  Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 10, 2013 at the St. John Lutheran Church, rural Garner, Iowa, with Rev. Carl Hedberg officiating. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery, rural Garner.  Visitation will be on Thursday from 5-7 p.m. at the 

Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, and then one hour before the service on Friday at the church.  Family suggests memorials to St. John Lutheran Church in memory of Jerry Toppin.

Charles King

 

Charles Howard King passed away April 25, 2013 at the age of 87, following a brief illness.  Born July 3, 1925 near Pleasanton, Iowa, he was currently a resident of Gulf Shores, Ala.

A Celebration of Life service was held Monday at Pine Rest Funeral Home in Foley, Ala.

Valores Young

 

Valores E. “Val” Young, 77, of Clear Lake, died Sunday, May 5, 2013 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, surrounded by her family.

Do to her wishes, she has been cremated and a “Celebration of Life” Memorial Service will be held in the near future.  Family has established a memorial fund at Clear Lake Bank and Trust so that she can continue to give to the community she loved.
