CL volleyball team opens season at Clarion Tournament

 

The Clear Lake volleyball team got its season off to a good start, going 2-3 in match play and 6-6 in sets at the Clarion Volleyball Tournament played Saturday.

The Lions posted wins over Northeast Hamilton (21-11, 21-15) and Eagle Grove (21-10, 21-10).  Clear Lake opened with a 22-20 win against Clarion-Goldfield, then dropped the second game 21-15 and fell in the third, 15-11.  A third and deciding game was also needed against CAL-Latimer.  CAL won the first two, 15-11, 22-20; the Lions dominated the third, 21-11.

Incumbent Second Ward Councilman, Mayor announce re-election plans

 

Clear Lake Second Ward Councilman Tony Nelson and Mayor Nelson Crabb each announced their plans Tuesday to seek re-election.  Both men are seeking second terms.

Reporter subscription campaign kicks off Sept. 9

 

On Monday, Sept. 9, five candidates will kick off the Mirror-Reporter’s annual Subscription Campaign.  The candidates will be competing for cash prizes totaling over $5,000.  

The campaign will run through Monday, Sept. 23.

      Charles (Chuck) Thomas Jorgensen, 91, Clear Lake, was called home on the evening of Aug. 26, 2013 to be with God, our heavenly Father, and Jesus Christ our Savior and Redeemer.  

Virginia L. Ingersoll

 

Virginia L. Ingersoll, Clear Lake Public Library’s first children’s librarian, died Aug. 23, 2013 after a long illness.  She was 91 years old.  In accordance with her wishes there will be no funeral service.  A private family 

interment of her ashes will be at Clear Lake Cemetery at a later date.  The family will hold an open house on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013 from 3-8 p.m. at Bob’s house, 511 N. Shore Drive, Clear Lake.

Darlene A. Bohn

 

     Darlene A. Bohn, 87, of Ventura died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013 at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, east of Garner, Iowa, with Rev. Carl Hedberg officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church.   

Alma C. Spilman

 

     Alma C. Spilman, 96, of Clear Lake died Friday, Aug. 23, 2013 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

     A burial will be held at 11:15 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013 at the Clear Lake Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Wednesday at Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th Street, Clear Lake.

     Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Ventura Public Library, 7 Ventura Street, Ventura, IA  50482.

Clear Lake to host Mason City in season opener

 

Clear Lake’s football rivalry with Mason City will resume this Friday, Aug. 30, with the Lions hosting the Mohawks in a 7:30 p.m. game.  Ninth grade teams will play at 5 p.m.  

In 2012, the Lions won bragging rights in their first meeting on the football field with Mason City after 82 years. Clear Lake broke open a scoreless game though two quarters with 34 points in the second half. 

  An estimated 6,000 fans watched the Lions post a 34-7 win at Mohawk Field.
