CLMS students are going i-tech

 

It’s like Christmas all over again for Clear Lake Middle School students.  This week, all 285 of Clear Lake’s sixth, seventh and eighth graders will receive a new individual Apple iPad for their personal use during the school year.

Elaine F. Beard, 83, 1102 8th Ave. Court S., Clear Lake, Iowa, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2012 at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.  

A funeral service was held Friday, Dec. 21, 2012 at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating.   Memorials may be given to the V.F.W. Auxiliary in memory of Elaine Beard.

CL girls roll over Bishop Garrigan

 

Clear Lake’s defense shut down Garrigan in the second half and secured a 43-29 win for the Lions Tuesday night.  The victory put the Lions at 5-2 in the North Central Conference.

The Lions trailed 7-6 after one quarter and were down 17-16 at the half before turning their game 

around.  They outscored the host Bears 13-4 in the third quarter and held them to just eight in the final frame.

Forfeits doom Cardinals in home wrestling meet

 

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura wrestling team hosted Belmond-Klemme and Northwood-Kensett on Tuesday, Dec. 18.

 

Due to a high number of forfeits, seven against N-K and six against B-K, the Cardinals had a hard time competing, dropping both matches.  G-H/V lost to Northwood, 60-18 and to Belmond-Klemme, 42-27.

Cards upset #9 rated North Iowa

 

What sometimes may seem like an impossible task, can actually be accomplished with a “never give up attitude.”  The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys basketball team proved just that when they topped number nine rated North Iowa on the road Tuesday night, Dec. 17.

“North Iowa posed a matchup problem for us and they are very balanced,” said Coach Joe Albertson.  “Early in the game we had trouble matching up, shooting the ball and possessing the ball.”

G-H/V girls fall hard to Bison, 50-36

 

A slow start doomed the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls basketball team to a 50-36 loss to North Iowa on Tuesday, Dec. 18.

The Bison took advantage of a poorly executed press break by the Cardinals to take a 13-6 first quarter lead.  G-H/V corrected some errors from the first quarter and outscored North Iowa 11-8 in the second quarter, but still trailed by four, 21-17.

Golden Bears control Lions in 79-67 win

 

After three hotly contested quarters, Algona Garrigan strung together three critical possessions to take control and get a win over the Clear Lake boys Tuesday, Dec. 18.  The final score was 79-67.  

The teams were locked at 32-32 at halftime, but the Golden Bears outscored the Lions 21-13 in the third and looked to be building momentum heading into the final quarter.  The Lions again closed the gap, but late in the game the home team again began to pull away.

Clear Lake woman killed in I-35 pile-up

 

A Clear Lake woman was killed in a 25-car pileup on Interstate 35 between Dows and Williams Friday afternoon in blizzard conditions.  

The Iowa State Patrol said 27-year-old Colby Bostick got out of her vehicle after her car was hit to check on her child in the back seat. While she was outside her vehicle, she was struck by another car.   Colby’s husband, Cody, who was with her in the car and her son, one-year-old Easton, were not injured.  

Also killed in the pileup was 43-year-old Sheila Blood, of Arkansas. 

No travel advised

 

 A Clear Lake Police Officer directs traffic onto Highway 18 after Interstate 35 was closed Thursday afternoon.  All traffic was forced off the interstate at Clear Lake.  

The orange cones in the foreground signaled the closed gate at the southbound entry to the interstate.
