Cardinals on a roll

 

It was a good week of basketball for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys, as they picked up two more wins.  The Cardinals moved their record to 15-4 overall and 10-3 in the North Iowa Conference.  G-H/V is currently tied atop the NIC with North Iowa.

A good night of shooting proved to be the Cardinals’ winning attribute on Tuesday, Jan. 29.  Hot hands by G-H/V helped them gain a 57-43 advantage over Lake Mills.

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls are rolling at the right time of the season.  The Cardinals picked up two big wins last week, moving their record to 13-6 overall and 9-4 in the North Iowa Conference.

It was a tale of two halves for the G-H/V girls when they traveled to Lake Mills on Tuesday, Jan. 29.

“We came out sloppy, turning the ball over on two of our first three possessions,” said Coach Matt Erpelding.

Winter Dance Party heats up the Surf

 

Clear Lake welcomed thousands last week and reveled in the celebration of rock and roll, courtesy of the Surf Ballroom’s Winter Dance Party.

The well-attended event included a fun family sock hop Wednesday, which set the stage for three nights of concerts.

Man escapes as vehicle falls through lake ice

 

A Mason City man was uninjured when the 1999 Jeep Cherokee he was driving went through the ice and was submerged in approximately 10 feet of water, prompting Iowa Department of Natural Resources conservation officers to remind people about inconsistency of ice.

  David Hand, 20, was driving on the ice to ice fish when the vehicle broke through after hitting an ice seam at approximately 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30.  A recovery firm from Spirit Lake removed the vehicle from the lake at the owners’ cost.

City Hall will be without power as new generator is installed Thursday

 

911 calls to be re-routed for short time

 

On Thursday, Feb. 7, at 10 a.m. Clear Lake City Hall will be without power while a new generator is put on line. It is expected that the cutover will take less than an hour. 

CL, Ventura firefighters called to blazes at OP, Silver Boot Motel

 

The Clear Lake Fire Department responded to two separate incidents Friday evening, starting with a reported kitchen fire at The Other Place on Highway 18 shortly before 5 p.m.

Lavon Hain

 

     Lavon Irene Hain, 88, Mason City, Iowa, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013 at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.  

     A Funeral Service was held Monday, Jan. 28, 2013 at the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ, Klemme, Iowa, with Rev. Donna Buckman officiating.  Interment was at Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Lavon Hain’s family.  

Donald Simpson

 

Donald L. Simpson, 60, of Long Beach, Calif., formerly of Wesley, Iowa, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, of complications from a stroke, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Long Beach.

Don was born Oct. 24, 1952 in Algona, Iowa, to E. Louis and E. Ruth (Seaberg) Simpson of Wesley.  Don graduated from Corwith Wesley High School  in 1970 and attended Iowa State University.
