Derwood Wells

 

 Derwood E. Wells, 81, of Clear Lake, passed away Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center- North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa, surrounded by his family.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura, Iowa, with the Rev. Daird Korth officiating.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.

Barbara Mack

 

A memorial for Barbara Marie Mack will be held on Sunday, Sept. 9, at 2 p.m. at Hoyt Sherman Place in Des Moines, Iowa.  Barbara, 59, died at her Des Moines home on Aug. 23 after a sudden illness.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication, Friends of Iowa Public Television or the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.

Indians stop Lions

 

Forest City-- and specifically quarterback Tate Thompson, was just too much for the Lions Friday night.  The Indians outscored Clear Lake 25-7 in the third quarter on their way to a 32-17 non-District victory.

Bad luck plagues the Cardinals

 

Friday night’s home opener for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura football team came down to the wire, but unfortunately, the Cards were not on the winning side as the buzzer sounded.

Clear Lake volleyball team sweeps Eagle Grove in home opener

 

The Clear Lake varsity volleyball squad won their first home match of the season in front of an enthusiastic Lion crowd.  Clear Lake swept Eagle Grove, 3-0.  Scores were 27-25, 25-14, 25-19.

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura volleyball team split a pair of games last week.   

 G-H/V vs. Osage

On Tuesday, Aug. 28, the Cardinals fell to Osage, 3-0.

A flat start by the Cardinals led to Osage jumping to an early advantage in set one on their way to a 25-14 win.  

G-H/V regained some composure in the second set and stayed within three points for the majority of the set.  A 

Good sports

 

Mason City Mayor Eric Bookmeyer made good on his end of a bet with Clear Lake Mayor Nelson Crabb about the outcome of the Clear Lake vs. Mason City football game.  As mayor of the town with the losing team, Bookmeyer served lunch in the Clear Lake High School cafeteria Thursday.  

 

End of summer celebrated

 

The Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce hosted its 2nd Annual End of Summer Beach Party during a weekend of perfect beach weather.  Hundreds enjoyed games, music and a movie at Saturday’s free event. 

Removal of stop signs a hot topic in Ventura

 

The Ventura City Council unanimously passed the first of three readings which would remove stop signs at three locations in the town at its Monday, Aug. 27, meeting.  The vote came after more than one and one-half hours of comments from the public.
