    Edward Oscar Tosel, 92, Mason City, Iowa, went to be with his Heavenly Father, Sunday, July 24, 2011, at his home surrounded by family and friends.
    A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, July 29, at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd Street N.E. Mason City, with Pastor Lionel Hart officiating.  A family graveside service will be held at Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City with full military honors conducted by members of the Mason City Veteran’s Memorial Association.

Tarr signs to play golf for NIACC

    Brent Tarr, a state golf champion in his senior season at Clear Lake High School, will take his game to the next level as a member of the North Iowa Area Community College golf team.

    The Clear Lake High School wrestling team participated in the 2011 Luther College Team Wrestling Camp in Decorah, Iowa, from July 6-9.  There were over 240 individuals participating in the team camp from four states.

Lions fall one win short of state berth; Boone wins, 9-8

In a game worthy of its reward, Boone out-slugged the Clear Lake Lions, 9-8 in a Class 3A Sub-State final.  The game sent the Lions home Monday night, just one win short of a state berth.  Boone (20-10) emerged the winner when Clear Lake (28-10) stranded runners at first and third in the seventh inning. 

Ventura inks superintendent sharing deal

Move to share G-H leader prompted by unexpected shake-up

 

    The Ventura School Board approved a one-year superintendent sharing agreement with the Garner-Hayfield School District in a special meeting Monday, July 25.  Ventura will pay 50 percent of Tyler Williams’ $150,000 salary, plus benefit package.  
    The Board unanimously supported the agreement.   The Garner-Hayfield board also approved the sharing Monday night.

Alliant Energy customers set new mark for energy use; Demand tops peak level set in 2003

 

    Interstate Power and Light Company, an Alliant Energy company, set an electric peak for customers in its west region, which includes Iowa and Minnesota. This group set a new record peak of 3,701 megawatts at 6 p.m. Monday, July 18.

Terry Unsworth has announced his plan to seek election to the remaining two-year term of the at-large City Council position he currently holds.

Faber and Kopriva earn North Central Conference softball recognition

Clear Lake’s Rea Faber was named to the First Team and Rachel Kopriva received Third Team recognition in North Central Conference balloting announced this week.
    Faber, a senior, was an All-NCC First Team selection as a outfielder; Kopriva was an infielder for the Lions.
    Clear Lake Coach Nicki Petersburg said Faber was a threat on offense and defense.

Donald Carolus

    Donald Maynard Carolus, 78, of 511 N. Van Buren, Mason City, Iowa died Saturday, July 16, 2011 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
    Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 19, at the Grace Evangelical Free Church, Mason City, with Pastor Nick Daugherty officiating.  Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.  Family suggests memorials to Donald M. Carolus Memorial Fund.
