Close game with Forest City; dominate Newman  

 

Following a poorly played game against Forest City on Tuesday night, Garner-Hayfield/Ventura’s Coach Matt Erpelding predicted his team would come back on Friday and play their best game of the season.  He was right.  The Cardinals picked up an easy win over Newman Catholic.

It was a week of ups and downs for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys.  They dropped a hard fought battle against Forest City, but pulled off a close one with Newman Catholic.

Forest City 56, G-H/V 40

Coming into the game, the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys knew Forest City was a quality team capable of creating turnovers and hitting threes.  The Indians lived up to their reputation, as they topped the Cardinals, 56-40, on Tuesday, Jan. 8.

Land adjoining Central Gardens of North Iowa sold

 

A Mason City developer has purchased the lot located immediately north of Central Gardens of North Iowa for $200,000.

The one-plus acre parcel was placed on the market in March 2012 at an asking price of $335,000.  

Donna Eckard, of Lake Iowa Realty, confirmed that the owners of the property, Burns & Burns Architects, of Iowa City, sold the property just before year-end.  Documents filed at the Cerro Gordo County Courthouse identify the buyer as BD Development LC, with Craig B. Skott and Ronald R.

Sukup named to Judicial Nominating Committee

 

Steve Sukup, of Clear Lake, is one of eight Republicans named by Iowa Governor Terry Branstad to the nonpartisan Judicial Nominating Commission, a citizen board responsible for interviewing and selecting 

nominees to the Iowa Supreme Court and Iowa Court of Appeals.

District Court hands down sentences in sex abuse cases

 

Two men facing charges of sexual abuse have been sentenced in Cerro Gordo County District Court.

District Judge James Drew sentenced 24-year-old David Powell, of Mason City, to up to 10 years in prison on one count of sexual abuse in the third degree, a Class C felony.  A $1,000 fine was 

suspended.  Powell was also sentenced to up to five years in prison after pleading guilty to one count of lascivious acts with a child, a Class D felony.

The sentences will run consecutively.

A solid win and an OT win for the Lions

 

The Clear Lake boys basketball team played two games last week, but won three!

The Lions have now been awarded a win in their Dec. 18 game at Bishop Garrigan because Garrigan used an ineligible player during the contest. Garrigan had won the game 79-67 and were 7-3 overall and 6-2 in the North Central Conference heading into the 

Cardinals rack up two more wins

 

It was a one-two punch for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys basketball team as they picked up two wins following the holiday break.
