“We have a very talented group of athletes who are all dedicated to track
and field, so I am looking forward to a competitive season,” said Coach Kelsey
Steffens.
Returning letter winners include distance runners Derek Brown, Ray
Cataldo, Logan Dalbeck and Chase Smith. Sam Cataldo, Conner Shaw and
David Cook will compete in sprints and hurdle events, while Ezra Marroquin
will be a sprinter and Johnathan O’Connor will compete in 400/800 events.
“It will be exciting to see what the team can do individually and with relays,”
said Steffens.
GHV sent an impressive eight events to the State Meet in 2015 and they are
hoping to get even more through this year. Those with State experience include
Smith in the 3200 meter run; Dalbeck in the 1600 meter run; Ezra Marroquin
in the 200, 400 and the 4x100 relay and the distance medley relay; Cataldo in
the 400 hurdles and the 110 high hurdles; Shaw and Cook both competed in
the 4x100 relay and O’Connor was a member of the distance medley relay.
Also adding to the team will be freshmen Holden Larson, Nathan Larson,
Tyler Nielsen, Lucas Rayhons, Kyle Bell and Reece Smith.
“We only have 21 boys out this season, so we are down in numbers,” said
Steffens. “It will be important to keep our athletes healthy throughout the
season.”
Steffens will be assisted this season by coach Ethan Bass, Cale Edwards and
Dillon Johanson.

What the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls track team lacks in
experience, they make up for in talent. GHV Girls Track Team
The team only returns two seniors in Miranda Jackson, a hurdler,

Head Coach Dyan Childress is also looking for the following
newcomers to contribute to the team this season Mara Anderson,
Jayden Hughes, Sadie Oulman, Amanda Bierle, Maddie Williams, Leah
Meinders, Hannah Lau, Nicole Upmeyer, Rachel Hejlik and Sarah
Weaver.
“I am looking for our sprint and middle distance events, as well as
our hurdlers to be key to our success this year,” said Childress.
Jackson and Heitland both competed at the State Track Meet last
season in the shuttle hurdle relay.
“It’s simply too early to have things put together for State
competition, but of course the shuttle hurdle team would love a return
trip to State,” said Childress. “I could also foresee a possible 4x400 or
the sprint medley being contenders. The girls are working hard and are
hungry to get as many events as possible to the State Meet.”
Childress said in addition to her team, she is looking for Forest
City, Lake Mills and West Hancock to be strong this season.

The team will be led by the following returning letterwinners: seniors, Colton
Raw, Dalton Basinger, Turner Albertson and Patrick Terhark and junior Brandon
Feuring. They are joined by sophomores Dane Whipple, Jonah Albertson, Colton
Schroeder, Connor Burke, Ryan Meyers and Nick Joynt.
Coach Williams is happy to have Aiden McRobey rejoining the team as the
goalie after taking a year off due to illness.
“Aiden is at full strength and ready to step up and play hard,” said Williams.
Williams said he is looking for Mason City, Clear Lake and Iowa Falls-Alden
to be tough competition this season.
“As a coach I feel that every athlete that commits to the daily training and
discipline of practice will highly contribute to the team. Each and every individual
is very important to the success of the team,” said Williams. “We have been blessed
with the addition of Ventura, whch has given us a lot of great athletes. It’s going to
be a great season.”
