Nelson debuted on “The Adventures
of Ozzie and Harriet” 55-plus years ago. As
arguably the most televised rock and roller
in history, he is often credited with delivering rock and roll to the main stream. In 1987 he
joined his father in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Nelsons are the only family in
history to have three generations of No.1 hit makers (Ozzie Nelson, Ricky Nelson, and Mat-
thew and Gunnar Nelson’s band Nelson. The fact that Harriet Nelson was a Des Moines,
Iowa native also makes the trek to Iowa and the Surf Ballroom even more special, say the
twins.
According to Gunnar, his father never performed at the Surf and had not met Buddy
Holly or the others taking part in the original Winter Dance Party.
“He was filming ( The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet) five days a week on the west
coast. He would do music on the weekends; he had to stay close to Los Angeles. But I think
all those guys at that time had a mutual respect and were fans of each others’ music.”
Ricky Nelson recorded million selling hits in the 1950s, but his singing career cooled
following the British Invasion in the 1960s. He returned to the top of the charts in the early
1970s with the song “Garden Party” and a new group, the country-rock Stone Canyon
Band. His life was tragically cut short when the plane carrying him and the band crashed in
De Kalb, Texas on Dec. 31, 1985.
