    The Clear Lake Lions seem to be hitting on all cylinders -- and that’s important heading into arguably one of the biggest regular season games ever to be played at Lions Field.

Vikings keep scoring train rolling; down CAL, 74-32

    One thing can be said for the Ventura Vikings - they sure know how to score.  So far this season, the Vikings have amassed 253 points.  Friday night’s game against CAL was no exception to the scoring frenzy, as Ventura topped the Cadets, 74-32.
    Ventura was a scoring machine in the first quarter, collecting four touchdowns. 
    Schmitz opened the scoring with a 31-yard run, followed by a completed seven-yard pass to Shawn Murphy.  Both PAT attempts were blocked for a 12-0 lead.  Joel Watson

G-H/V/WH cross country teams have impressive week

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura/West Hancock cross country teams put in another impressive week.  Both the girls and boys brought home top finishes in their home meet held Monday, Sept. 26, and a met at Hampton-Dumont on Thursday, Sept. 29.

    The girl’s team placed first and the boys captured second place at their home meet.  The girls finished with 20 points, ahead of North Iowa with 67 and Central Springs with 81.  The boys finished with 61 points, behind Osage with 43 points.  Seven teams competed in the meet.

Lady Vikes go 1-2 in recent volleyball action

    The Ventura volleyball team dropped two games and picked up one win in recent volleyball action.

    The Lady Vikes traveled to Swea City on Tuesday, Sept. 27, to play NSKAR.  Ventura lost in three matches, 26-24, 25-15 and 25-8.

Two conference teams top the Lions

A pair of North Central Conference opponents topped the Clear Lake volleyball team in regular season action last week.

    The Lions (1-14) opened the week playing Tuesday, Sept. 27, at Clarion-Goldfield.  The Cowgirls won in three close games, 25-18, 25-18, 25-16. 
    Despite the loss, Coach Scott Swenson said he was encouraged by the energy and productivity helping the Lions off the bench.

CL runners compete at Algona Invitational

    Clear Lake cross country teams were at Algona Monday, Sept. 26, to compete in the large Algona Invitational.  As the result of a tiebreaker, the Lion girls placed sixth overall, while the boys team recorded some of its best times of the season and finished ninth overall.

Winds whip up field fires

   Members of the Clear Lake Fire Department battled two separate fires in the extremely windy conditions on Thursday, Sept. 29.  Despite the wind fire crews, also concerned with dry vegetation, managed to keep the fires from spreading and causing further damage.

CL farmer pleads guilty to loan fraud

Olk convicted of using fraudulent grain receipts

 

    A Clear Lake man who made false statements to obtain loans from a bank pled guilty Thursday in federal court in Cedar Rapids.
    Michael Dean Olk, 56, was convicted of using fraudulent grain receipts as collateral for two bank loans.
    At the plea hearing, Olk admitted he pledged grain he did not own in order to obtain two bank loans.

Students and parents dig in to improve garden

    Last spring, students at Clear Creek Elementary school launched an ambitious fundraising campaign to collect as much change and as many dollars as they could to enhance outdoor playgrounds, classroom and garden areas at the school. Through the “Change for Change…It Makes Sense to Grow our Children!”

Clear Lakers urged to support state plan by walking on Friday

  

  Louie Covillo’s message is simple-- come out and walk on Friday.  Covillo is the local chairperson for Iowa’s Start Somewhere Walk, scheduled to take place at noon Friday, Oct. 7. 
    In Clear Lake, walks are planned at City Park and Opportunity Village as part of the goal of making Iowa the healthiest state in the nation within five years.  Iowa Governor
