The Clear Lake girls softball team earned its first win of the season during a busy holiday week.  The Lions also dropped five contests to various North Iowa powers.

School Board hires new high school principal

    The Clear Lake School Board welcomed a new administrator Monday night.  The Board approved the hiring of Chris Murphy as its new high school principal.
    Murphy, 36, is currently employed as a school improvement leader in the Des Moines Public School System.  He has held that position for six years.  Murphy’s experience also includes serving as dean of students for a high school alternative school and middle school.

Public hearing scheduled for Surf district streetscape work

A pubic hearing has been scheduled for Monday, June 18, to receive public input on proposed streetscape improvements on North Shore Drive which will link the recently completed Three Stars Plaza and Buddy Holly Place with the historic Surf Ballroom.
    The City applied for a Transportation Enhancement grant in 2011 and was awarded $87,138 to construct the project. The cost of construction is conservatively estimated at approximately $200,000.

County Health: Take whooping cough seriously

    The Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health has confirmed 48 suspected or lab confirmed cases of pertussis (whooping cough) in the county. Disease Prevention Specialists encourage individuals to follow the guidelines to ensure the health and safety of everyone.

New executive director begins quest to meet membership, expand value of Chamber

    It’s been a whirlwind six weeks for Tim Coffey, the new executive director of the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. 
    Since stepping into the leadership position at the Chamber, Coffey says he has been on the fast track learning about the vast number of Chamber programs and projects, as well as sharing his experience and expectations with staff and members.

Memorial tree planted by CLHS Class of 2011

The Clear Lake High School Class of 2011 planted a tree on Tuesday, May 22 at the Clear Lake baseball diamonds to honor former teacher and coach Blake Lobdell.  The tree is located down the third base line

Lions claim runner-up honors at State Meet

Decorah unseats Clear Lake to claim 3A State Golf championship

Top ranked Decorah unseated Clear Lake as Class 3A State Golf champions over the weekend, posting a (308-308) 616.  Clear Lake, which had defeated the Vikings in Regional play, was runner-up with a (323-327) 650.  The State Meet was played Friday and Saturday at Ames Golf and Country Club.

A wild first week for Clear Lake baseball team

The Clear Lake baseball team started the season ranked number two in Class 3A.  After a wild first week during which the Lions went 2-2, it remains to be seen if the ranking will change.  The wins were over number 10 ranked Charles City, while the losses came in a doubleheader played against Class 1A number seven rated Newman Catholic.

Girls soccer team drops evenly matched game to Mason City

    It couldn’t have been more even, but after 120-minutes of play the Mason City Mohawks got the win over the Clear Lake girls soccer team Tuesday night.  The Mohawks were 2-1 winners in a double overtime 10 shot place kick shootout.
    The Lions got their goal in the first half from Logan Anderson.

    The Clear Lake girls ran into a Class 4A buzz saw in their season opener Monday, May 21.  The Mohawks topped the Lions in three innings, 14-0.
    “They were a very difficult team to play our first game against,” said Coach Nikki Petersburg.  “As the score reflects, our hitters were not prepared to face a pitcher of Lexi Peterson’s caliber.”
