William D. Hoversten

William Dean Hoversten, 62, passed away unexpectedly in his Mason City home on Tuesday, July 25, 2023.

A Graveside Memorial with Military Honors will be held at 10 a.m., on Saturday Aug. 26, at Memorial Park Cemetery,11495 265th St., Mason City.

William (Bill) was born on Aug. 30, 1960, at St Joseph’s Mercy Hospital, Mason City, the third child of Donald and Jacqueline (Hall) Hoversten, of Clear Lake. Bill grew up and attended Clear Lake schools, graduating in May 1978. In his youth, Bill actively participated in Boy Scouts and football and wrestling in Junior High/High School and loved singing, dancing and clubbing. Bill continued to sing along with the radio to the 70s-80s music he grew up on whenever a familiar tune was played.

Following graduation, Bill proudly served in the United States Marine Corps, as a field radio operator at various Marine Corps bases from June 1,1978 until he was Honorably Discharged as a Staff Sergeant (E-6) on April 28,1989. He was an active member of the Marine Corp Reserve and Lifetime member of the Marine Corps League.

After his military service, Bill returned to Clear Lake to be near his family and friends. Bill was always willing to help others and took pride in being the “squared away” Marine/man he’d become. Bill held various jobs in the community and he believed no job was too small to give “110%”. 

In his free time Bill enjoyed spending time with family and watching sports on TV, especially, football and wrestling. He was an avid fan of the Minnesota Vikings and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Bill faced many challenges throughout his life with courage strength and determination. He will be sorely missed. Semper Fi!

Those left to cherish memories of Bill are his sister, Kathy (Eric) Verhalen; niece, Jami (Chris) Ewing, Katlyn, Lily; nephews, Joshua (Colleen) Heginger, Joshua Jr., Esther, Justin Verhalen, Kourtney, Ava, Hudsyn, Macklyn, Nathan Verhalen, Gianna, and Nicholas Verhalen; and his brother, Minh Nguyen and family.

William is preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Jacqueline; sister, Susan (Hoversten) Swartwood; and infant brothers, James and Todd.

Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, Mason City, was in charge of arrangements.
