CL boys golf team faces tough competition

The Clear Lake boys golf team put their game up against some of the best teams in Iowa and Minnesota last week.

Tanner Storbeck paced the Clear Lake boys and earned medalist honors in a very competitive triangular played Tuesday at Spring Valley against Algona Garrigan and Esterville- Lincoln Center.  ELC finished one stroke better than Clear Lake, 172-173, while Garrigan finished with 175.

Storbeck’s round of 40 was one stroke better than runner-up Jack Brashear, of ELC.  

“Tanner showed great mental toughness,” said Clear Lake Coach Eric Perry.  “He was four over after three holes and played the final six holes even par.  He really paced our team, and has been a valuable leader on the team.”  

Anthony Piscopo shot a great round, coming in with a 42. Kyle Calaguas was next with a 44 and John Carew rounded out the Lions’ scoring with a 47.  Thomas Storbeck and Dane Waldron had rounds of 49 and 52 for the Lions.

“The weather was a determining factor as we had wind gust around 35 mph, as well as sub-50 degree weather.  All factors to high scoring,” said Coach Perry.  “Kyle continues to put up very good scores, we just need a complete round out of him.  A couple holes did him in.  Kyle will be better as the season grows.”

Austin Rurup and Rowdy Yates had great scores to help the JV get two wins.  The Lions shot a 200, while Garrigan had 2111 and ELC 234.  

“Austin is a varsity golfer, with state championship levels of competition.  He will continue to push our varsity and will take a position if one stumbles,” said Coach Perry.  

Junior varsity scores included: Rurup (43), Yates (47), Austin Pitkin (54), Noah Heggen (56), Tre Geitzenauer (57), Braydon Emerson (58).

WC 143, CL 160, 

St. Ed’s 160

Three of the state’s top teams met for a triangular at Briggs Woods in Webster City Thursday, April 23.  Webster City, ranked number three in Class 3A, topped Clear Lake and St. Ed’s.

The Lynx fired a school record one-under par 143 to outdistance Clear Lake, ranked eighth in Class 3A, and St. Ed’s, ranked second in Class 2A.  The Lions and Gaels each shot 160.  The Lions finished second on a fifth score tie-breaker.

Clear Lake’s two sophomores, Thomas Storbeck and Kyle Calaguas, led the way with 38s.
