CL boys soccer falls to W-SR power house

The Clear Lake boys soccer team played got a true test of their ability last week, as the Lions tallied another win against North Iowa competition before taking on Class 2A power Waverly-Shell Rock.

CL 5, CAL 0

The Lions recorded another shut-out Tuesday, April 14, at Latimer.  Clear Lake topped CAL, 5-0.

In the ninth minute of the contest Ernie Miszewski finished an attack on goal for the first score of the contest.

In the 14th minute, Jarod Anderson added the second goal of the match.

In the 17th minute Anderson played a corner kick into the middle of the box.  MJ Mixdorf made a great play on the ball, placing it into the back of the net for the third goal.  The Lions took a 3-0 lead into the half.

In the 43rd minute, Anderson played a long ball to Miszewski, who took the ball to the net for his second goal of the night.

The final goal of the night came off an attack by Jack Finn up the left side of the field.  Finn played a cross to Tanner Berger, who finished the attack with a header goal.

The match concluded 5-0 with keeper Jacob Hogan and the defense recording their second shut out of the season.

W-SR 6, CL 0

The Lions, rated third in Class 1A, took on the third ranked team in Class 2A Thursday, April 16.  Waverly-Shell Rock turned away a determined Clear Lake squad, 6-0.

“We made a couple critical errors in the first half which allowed Waverly to get some great shots on goal,” said Coach Matt Anderson.  The Go-Hawks jumped to an early 2-0 lead going into the halftime.

“The second half we seemed to be playing a little better as a team, until Waverly was awarded a penalty kick, which they converted.  Waverly got another goal shortly there after and things spiraled downward after that point.”

The Lions managed six shots on the Go-Hawks’ goal keeper.  “Two of our shots on goal probably get across the line against any other team,” said Coach Anderson.

The coach noted he was very happy with the consistency and effort of Luke Maring, the center defender.  “He was working double time most of the match.”

Jacob Hogan was busy in the keeper box, recording 13 saves and gave tremendous effort, as well, said Anderson.

“Waverly came in with tremendous speed and took advantage of the offside line a majority of the contest.  This game exposed some areas we’ll have to address and improve upon if we want to play soccer with the best teams in the state,” added the coach.

The Lions’ next match is at home on Thursday, April 23, against 14th ranked Iowa Falls-Alden at 5:30 p.m.
