Wieck resigns after 27 years at the Lion helm

Clear Lake Head Football Coach Fred Wieck has submitted his resignation after 27 years on the job.

Wieck announced he is stepping down to assist his son, Rudy, who will be the new head football coach at Storm Lake, pending School Board approval.

“Rudy is a third year teacher and coach and did some coaching in college.  I think he could use my help to hopefully turn things around at Storm Lake,” Wieck told KRIB sportscaster  Bob Fisher.

Wieck called his decision to resign “terribly tough.”  During his time at Clear Lake he led the 2000 Lions to a Class 3A State Championship and finished as runner-up in 2006.  His 2014 team was ranked number one throughout the season, but was ousted in the Second Round by fourth ranked Sioux Center.

Wieck retired from his coaching and teaching positions at CLHS at the conclusion of the 2012 school year.  However, he continued as head football coach, a position he had held since 1988.  He has a career record of 279-91, ranking in the state’s top 20.  Under his direction the Lions have qualified for the State playoffs 20 times, including the past 17 straight years.  Prior to coming to Clear Lake, Wieck taught and coached at Plainfield and Green Mountain Garwin.  He also won a state title at GMG in 1987.
