Semi hits stalled truck, killing one

One person was killed and another seriously injured when a semi struck a stalled pickup truck on Interstate 35 near Clear Lake Thursday, March 19.

 

According to the Iowa State Patrol, 67-year-old Joleen McCrary, of Traer, Iowa died as a result of the accident.  Her husband, Mark McCrary, 67, was transported to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City for treatment.  The semi driver, 54-year-old Edward Travis, of Paducah Kentucky, was also injured and was also transported to Mercy-North Iowa. He was later treated and released.

Authorities report the pickup Mark McCrary was driving, a 2002 Dodge Ram,  had stalled in a southbound lane of Interstate 35 between exits 193 and 194 at about 12:45 p.m. Thursday.  

The semi hit the back of a pickup, scattering debris and pinning the driver and passenger inside.  

Traffic on I-35 southbound was re-routed for a period of time while emergency crews responded to the scene.

Investigation into the accident is ongoing.  It is being conducted by the Iowa State Patrol.
