NCC wrestling meet Saturday in Clear Lake
The North Central Conference wrestling tournament will be held this Saturday in Clear Lake. The meet starts at 10 a.m.; finals will be approximately 2:30.
Clarion, the 2014 Class 1A state champion, is the favorite to capture the conference crown. Clear Lake, Humboldt, Webster City and Hampton are also expected to contend for the title. Algona, Iowa Falls
and Ft. Dodge St. Edmond all have ranked wrestlers, but are not expected to be in the top four teams.
One of the marque match-ups could be at 120 pounds, where Clear Lake’s Ryan Schmalen will potentially compete against Clarion’s returning state champion, Justin Portillo. The two split their previous two meetings this year. Clear Lake’s Brennen Doebel and Ryan Faught are returning NCC champions, while Ryan Leisure was a runner-up to Portillo. Faught, a junior, won titles his freshman and sophomore years.
Help is always needed to run the eight-team tournament. Those interested in helping are asked to contact Gary Weber at 641-425-7921.
