GHV girls drop first game of the season

After adding another win to their impressive record, the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls hit a buzz saw when they encountered Bishop Garrigan and dropped their first game of the season.  The loss moved the Cardinal’s record to 6-1, 7-1.

GHV 48, Central Springs 30

It wasn’t all smooth sailing for the GHV girls, but they still managed a 48-30 victory over Central Springs on Friday, Dec. 19.

“We struggled tremendously in the first half on offense and executing our zone offenses,” said Coach Matt Erpelding.  “We did much better in the second half and were able to maintain the lead.”

The stellar GHV defense was able to hold the Panther offense to only four points in the first quarter, while they scored 11.

Emily Spilman took over in the second quarter and within a couple of minutes of play managed two steals and six points to take a 21-9 lead.  The Cardinals headed into the break with a 27-14 lead.

It was more of the same in the third quarter with GHV leading 39-23 at the end of the quarter.  Tiara Van Gerpen sunk a three with 3:38 remaining in the game for the Cardinals final basket, 48-25.  The bench took over from there and Central Springs scored five more points for the final, 48-30.

“Our size in the front court and quickness in the backcourt was a great combination in this game,” said Erpelding.  “They had a tough time guarding our size and our guards were able to force several TOs.”

Spilman and Hannah Lau both hit double figures, scoring 13 and 12 points respectively.  Grace Tusha scored eight and Jillian Heitland scored five points.

Tusha led the team in rebounds with eight and Lau grabbed five.  Lau also had three steals and two blocked shots and Tusha had three steals and one blocked shot.

Spilman led the team in assists with three in addition to her two steals.  Tiara Van Gerpen led the team in steals with four.
