Cardinals open 2014-15 wrestling season
It’s been a very busy week for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura wrestling team.
They started the week on Tuesday, Dec. 2, where they picked up wins over Algona, Eagle Grove and North Union at the Eagle Grove Tournament. The Cardinals had close matches against Algona and Eagle Grove, topping Algona 42-39 and Eagle Grove 40-39. GHV rolled over North Union, who had nine forfeits, 72-6.
Results of the Eagle Grove Tournament are as follows:
•106 - Tyler Oberman: lost by a fall against Algona, 2:29 and picked up a forfeit against North Union.
•113 - Austin Case: went 3-0 with pins against Algona, 2:37 and Eagle Grove, :57. He won by forfeit in the North Union bout.
•120 - Andrew Dornbier: went 3-0 by pinning his Algona opponent, 1:21, and receiving forfeits against North Union and Eagle Grove.
•126 - Dalton Basinger: pinned his Algona opponent in 1:21 and was pinned by Eagle Grove, 5:52. He received a forfeit against North Union.
•132 - Derek Brown: went 1-2 by pinning his North Union opponent in 1:13. He was pinned by Algona, 1:36, and Eagle Grove, 3:29.
•138 - Colyn Schoneman: went 3-0 with a major decision over Eagle Grove, 25-14, and forfeits from North Union and Algona.
•145 - Anthony Sherwood: lost a 6-0 decision to Eagle Grove and picked up two forfeits from North Union and Algona.
•152 - John Hulbert: won by fall against North Union, :40, and lost by fall to Algona, 3:36 and Eagle Grove, 2:48.
•160 - Connor Shaw: went 3-0 by pinning all his opponents, North Union, :20; Eagle Grove, :24; and Algona, 2:24.
•170 - Cade Baker: went 3-0 with pins over Algona, 1:05 and Eagle Grove, 1:54 and one forfeit.
•182 - Grady Umbarger: pinned his North Union opponent in 1:05 and won by forfeit against Eagle Grove and forfeited against Algona.
•220- Connor Smith: pinned his Algona opponent in 2:24 and forfeited against North Union and Eagle Grove.
On Thursday, Dec. 4, the team went 1-2 with a win over Belmond-Klemme, 42-36, and losses to Osage, 54-27, and Newman, 39-36, at the Belmond-Klemme Quadrangular.
“The kids wrestled really well on Tuesday,” said Coach Steve Smith. “We had wrestlers missing on Thursday due to a jazz band competition, so we ended up having open weights which really hurt.”
Results for the Belmond-Klemme Quadrangular are as follows:
